Paul earned a Masters in exercise physiology from Ball State University in 1996, and a PhD in Physiology from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2006. His primary field of research since 1996 has been in the neural control of breathing. He has been a faculty member at Carthage College since 2009. In 2013, he began studying an inherited behavioral temperament called behavioral inhibition amongst college-aged students. In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award at Carthage College. In the fall of 2021, he will be stepping down as the chair of the Biology Department and become the new dean of the Professional Studies Division at Carthage College.
