Larry Smith

A 1967 Western Michigan graduate, Larry Smith was a single, eighth grade English teacher when he was drafted into the United States Army. After nine months of flight training, he flew helicopters for 12 months in Vietnam.Afterwards, he was sent to Fort Bragg, NC where he continued flying. Upon leaving the Army in 1971, he continued in the U.S. Army Reserves and National Guard as a helicopter pilot until 1985. Retiring from General Motors after 30 years, Larry worked as a substitute teacher; during this time he gave presentations about his Vietnam experience to over 8,500 teachers and students.
