Kalyani Rai, PhD

Kalyani Rai, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education Policy and Community Studies in the School of Education. She is an educator, researcher, and practitioner in the field of community education with a focus on education (in)-equity, social justice, social change, and educational transformation in local, regional, and global contexts. She uses participatory research and teaching models through engaging families, community organizations and educational institutions in collaborative partnerships.

She holds a doctorate in education from University of Wisconsin-Madison with an emphasis on adult and community education. She has more than 20 years of teaching both credit and non-credit classes and has conducted numerous participatory action research initiatives with socio-economically and linguistically disadvantaged children, youth, and adults and families in Milwaukee. Her current collaborative research project examines the perspectives of language acquisition contexts among diverse ethnic heritage language speakers in Milwaukee.

Dr. Rai has been involved in nonprofit start-up, program design, implementation, and management with diverse minority communities including immigrants and refugees. She integrates her research and community-focused education development experiences in her teaching. She is a member of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and currently serves on the State of Wisconsin Refugee Advisory Council.
