Ellen O’Brien has been an English teacher for 47 years, first at MPS and then at MATC. During that time, she worked in alternative education and started New School for Community Service with five other MPS teachers. She received a B.A. from Mt. Mary College in Latin and English (1969), a master’s degree in education from Alverno College (2004), and a master’s degree in creative writing from Mt. Mary College (2010). She enjoys being a member of an inner-city gospel choir, and she has toured with other church choirs to France and Italy. Her most memorable adventure was a trip to Monrovia, Liberia, in 2006, where she helped doctor friends, former Liberian women, create a school in an area of war-torn Monrovia, where there had been no schools for fourteen years.
