This is an opportunity to discuss and explore successful strategies to achieve your goals in collective bargaining.  Attendees should bring their challenging bargaining issues to share with the class and instructors to gain shared insight.

  • Understanding impasse and implementation – How it can help you achieve your goals
  • Strikes – Key elements of a strike plan that you need to know

This program is preapproved by the Society for Human Resource Management for 14 Professional Development Credits (PDCs) toward the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.

Course Outline/Topics

A segment of the program is devoted to an open forum in which you and other workshop members can receive analysis and strategic planning ideas for your own negotiations from both the instructors and attendees. We will also deal with various hypotheticals and a case study to foster engagement during the course and encourage critical thinking.

Please have your collective bargaining agreement available for the program and bring your questions about items that you want changed.

 

Program Agenda

Negotiation preparation:

  • Learn how to apply economic value to items historically viewed as non-economic
  • Develop obtainable goals and objectives, as well as supporting data and documentation, for use at the negotiating table

Presentation of bargaining positions at the table:

  • Understand how to develop and communicate a theme for bargaining
  • Experience strategizing the negotiation of a comprehensive economic package addressing wages, health insurance and pensions

Role-playing to deal with intangibles encountered during negotiations:

  • How to handle a rogue union committee member
  • Become skilled at moving beyond the initial presentation of a position and focus on the organization’s objective
  • Respond to a union committee’s claim that it cannot sell a critical management demand

Special Feature:
One day of the workshop consists of analysis of a case study, discussion of hypotheticals, and most importantly, an open forum in which workshop members bring critical issues in their own negotiations (whether past or upcoming) for full discussion and analysis.

This interactive workshop is designed to allow participants to engage with one another on strategies, overcoming challenges, and learning better ways to achieve your bargaining goals.
