Applied Data Analysis Workshop

Using basic and complex data sets, explore the four core phases of working with data – inventory, visualization, prediction and action. As you progress through the course, learn to use more complex and sophisticated techniques. Beyond lectures, participants learn to immediately apply methods in independent and small group activities.

This course can be applied to the Data Analysis Certificate.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a language for communicating about data and analytical techniques
  • Establish good patterns for cleaning disorganized data sets
  • Translate information with beautiful visuals tailored to your audience
  • Effectively map problem statements to the proper method or technique
  • Foster confidence in interpreting analytical results and avoiding “data-driven” fallacies

Course Outline/Topics

The course has four phases — though the lines are blurred, think about all four running in parallel like traffic lanes. These lanes are framed by context and intent –themes that are woven through the entire course. Those lanes are:

  1. Resource location, extraction and tidying
  2. Visualization
  3. Modeling for exploration and prediction
  4. Decision support and action

We want to think about what needs to be done and with what tools, while identifying when we switch lanes.

  1. Resource location, extraction and tidying
    • Where does data reside and who owns access to it?
    • Relational and time series database structure
    • Tidy data for analysis
  2. Visualization
    • Compare across categories and/or over time
    • Generate visual inquiry
    • Free and paid tools available
    • Storyboarding
  3. Modeling for exploration and prediction
    • Statistics crash course
    • Inferential statistics toolkit
    • Exploring present and predicting future
    • Model interpretation
      • Using in-sample and out-of-sample feedback
  4. Decision support and action
    • Replicate or avoid
    • Predictions and production
      • Applying analytical techniques to standard work

"The course has provided a terrific refresher and spring board for further self study. We discussed ideas for improvements in class."  —  Accountant, 2018

"Brendon was very patient and willing to review things in detail to make sure that we were able to complete the exercises with confidence. The material was presented with the proper building blocks. Additional feedback was provided to help future classes. I look forward to using the skills I gained in my next job."  —  Nicolas Timm, 2018
