A Call to Conscience: Speeches of MLK

In this short course, group participation is encouraged as we discuss topics such as active nonviolence, Black Panthers, forgiveness, social justice, and King’s notion of a “beloved community.” Please read the introduction and first two speeches from “A Call to Conscience: The Landmark Speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” by Clayborne Carson and Kris Shepard to be prepared for the first day of class.

Mark Hilgendorf has a doctorate in African American history and has taught for 40 years at Milton Academy and the University School. He teaches seminars with an emphasis on class participation.
