Thesis: Urban Loft Living Above an Urban Market

Justin Koeppler

Graduate/2015

The demand for speed and efficiency in our society has resulted in a change in the market typology. Expedient big box supermarkets provide shoppers with quick service but lacks sense of place and social interaction. This project will propose a new public market with housing units that are lofted above to become a roof to the market. The mixes use development will serve Milwaukee’s southern neighborhoods that will act as an urban catalyst for a currently unused former industrial site. Specialized market stalls will create various typologies to allow for year round use of the market. By moving away from the supermarket as the primary typology for markets in our society, the creation of a highly customized market will act as an anchor for a neighborhood that has lost a sense of place.
