Founding Principal Sebastian Schmaling will discuss recent projects to illustrate his studio’s elaborate design process in which the close reading of physical context and cultural memory translates into an abstract architectural narrative that informs the entire evolution of Johnsen Schmaling’s work, from initial conceptual ideas to the development of intricate construction details.

Sebastian Schmaling – Johnsen Schmaling Architects is widely recognized as a distinct voice in contemporary American architecture. The studio’s work has garnered critical acclaim for its conceptual rigor, serene simplicity, and formal restraint.
Founded in 2003, Johnsen Schmaling has garnered over 120 professional design awards and has been featured in leading design publications, countless books, and exhibitions around the globe. The office received the Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League of New York and was featured in Architectural Record’s Vanguard issue as one of ten “exceptional global architecture firms to watch.” Architectural Digest named Johnsen Schmaling one of “Ten Rising Stars in American Architecture,” and Forbes included the studio in its inaugural list of “America’s Top Residential Architects.” On Rigor, Johnsen Schmaling’s first monograph, was published in 2022.”
