Urban riverfronts in the Midwest and throughout the Rust Belt have historically served primarily industrial purposes. However, over the last 50 years with the decline of industry, cities have turned toward reclaiming these waterways for public open space. Cities have looked toward the revitalization of urban riverfronts as economic drivers, creating vibrant recreational spaces and a source of civic pride. Looking toward the future, these riverfronts can also serve as a source of urban resilience and sustainability, enhancing the biodiversity of our cities and creating new habitat for urban flora and fauna. “Reclaiming our Riverfronts” will examine the evolution of urban rivers in Milwaukee and Chicago through case studies in the latest planning and design initiatives.
