The Midwest Stack Exchange leverages the growing interest in inter-institutional partnerships in the Midwestern United States to initiate and sustain an annual correspondence exchange between stakeholders from each of the 44 schools of architecture in the region. Every summer, fellows and students from within the university and community members participate in a 4200-mile-long, free traveling architectural colloquium – The Stack Exchange Tour – during which they deposit the stacks of correspondence into 44 site-specific repositories placed at 44 locations between the schools. Faculty read their students’ messages, catalog the nature of their observations, discuss them with colleagues from the 43 other institutions, and consolidate the information into a set of themes that shape the format of the summer tour. The project prompts a cultural shift in architectural education in the Midwest by creating new opportunities for trans-disciplinary collaborations and experimental pedagogies while establishing a culture of transparency and radical sharing.
