2021-2022 FELLOW:

Debbie Chen will join SARUP this fall as the 2021-2022 Architectural Activism Fellow. Details for her fall seminar will be coming soon.

Debbie Chen practices as a licensed architect in New York and is a current part-time instructor at Syracuse University School of Architecture. Born in Taiwan and raised in Los Angeles, her work often explores issues of scale, assembly, and infrastructure where design overlaps with extra-disciplinary fields such as socio-political and economic networks, civic utilities, and material ecologies. Her Municipal C.H.U.W. proposal for a localized waste management institution in NYC was awarded the Holcim Awards Next Generation 1st Prize in North America. Debbie currently serves as a Project Architect at Morphosis Architects for the design of a new academic building at the University of Toronto, as well as for the construction of a land port-of-entry facility at the US-Canadian border. Her previous professional work includes the design and construction of other high-profile institutional projects in the state of New York. Debbie received a Master of Architecture from Princeton University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California.

THIS SUMMER IN MILWAUKEE:

Buildings-Landscapes-Culture Field School Organized by Arijit Sen – Call for Participants – Application due June 10th
Our goal is to write urban histories that reflect the lived realities of people in Milwaukee’s marginalized and segregated neighborhoods. In Summer 2021 we will examine community spaces such as streets, sidewalks, alleys, open spaces, gardens, empty lots, and parks. These are sites where community members sustain human relationships and practice mutual aid and self-care. Using methods such as material culture and architectural documentation, history harvests, short and long-form oral histories, community-led walks, asset mapping, and spatial ethnography, we will document the geography, layout, and stories of everyday life in these spaces. Questions contact Arijit Sen at sena@uwm.edu.
