October 23, 2020 @ 1:30 PM CT – Urban Edge Series- Lecture by Yvonne Battista and Brent Raymond, DTAH hosted by Jim Wasley
Brent Raymond and Yvonne Battista are landscape architects with DTAH, a multidisciplinary design firm in Toronto. They will speak about their water-centric landscape and urban design efforts with a focus on the Toronto waterfront and other key projects in the Region.

October 23, 2020 @ 1:30 PM CT – Lecture by Jim Shields: Let There Be Light: Renovation Plans for the UWM Student Union
Faculty Jim Shields, FAIA will address his recently completed design for the renovation of the Mid-Century Modern Student Union at UW-Milwaukee. Working with HGA for the State of Wisconsin, Shields has developed concepts to open significant areas of the currently dark Union to natural daylight, provide clear and comprehensive wayfinding in a labyrinthian building, and develop new places for students to study, socialize and find the support they need to be successful.

Invited speakers to the DAR Graduate Colloquium will examine business and entrepreneurial skills needed to embark upon a successful career in architecture and ponder on their own experience and practice in this field.

Speaker: Falamak Nourzad, AIA
Co-founder and principal of Continuum Architects + Planners, Falamak brings high performance and design standards to every stage of the architectural process. She is an excellent programmer, planner, and designer with a strong ability to integrate holistic concepts with precise details to meet the unique needs of each client.

She studied interior design and received her Master’s degree in architecture at UW-Milwaukee. With over 25 years of professional experience, she has worked in a variety of markets. She is currently working on the renovation of the Historic Mackie Building, Pleasant Haven Senior Living, and the office renovation for Laughlin-Constable in the historic Mitchell Building. Her passion for building better communities through modern architecture has led to numerous market-rate and affordable housing developments that have helped revitalize several urban Milwaukee neighborhoods. In that last five years, her projects have won ten awards from the Business Journal, the Milwaukee Mayor’s office, and WCREW, among others. Architect of the year 2017.

October 31, 2020 – Registration deadline – International Owl Center Design Concept Contest

The International Owl Center is the only all-owl education center in the United States. We currently operate out of a downtown storefront but plan to build a new facility adjacent to a park. We need creative ideas to address some very specific challenges we face.

November 2, 2020 – Registration deadline – HUD Affordable Housing hosted by the Office of Policy Development and Research
HUD Competition: Graduate students only. Need to include diversity of disciplines in the student membership:

  • 2 M. Architecture candidates
  • 1 M. Planning or Public Policy candidate
  • 2 MBA candidates

If you are interested in incorporating this into a studio this year and need help identifying a planning student and two business students to include, please contact Nancy Frank.

SCHOLARSHIPS::

SARUP Inclusion and Diversity Scholarship (undergrad only)
We will award 3-4 scholarships ranging from $3000 – $5000 for the 2020-21 academic year. December 2020 graduating students are eligible.
