October 2, 2020 @ 1:30 PM CT – Urban Edge Series-Herbert Dreiseitl. Ecological Waterscapes: Urban Case Studies Hosted by Jim Wasley

In this talk, Herbert Dreiseitl will focus specifically on urban projects, involving managing stormwater on-site. Herbert will provide a more detailed description of Potsdammer Platz, for example, the largest single redevelopment project in Berlin following Germany’s reunification in 1990. Here, Dreiseitl’s water feature becomes an organizing element that creates a quiet blue/green oasis around what would otherwise be perceived as a busy vehicular tunnel entrance. The fountain, large enough to be thought of as a small urban lake, runs on recirculated stormwater from the surrounding development. It cleans this water without the use of chemicals through natural ecological processes and keeps it from Berlin’s overburdened sewer system in ways that are directly relevant to Milwaukee’s stormwater challenges.

By combining a 3D model of SARUP and the Altspace VR platform (a multi-user virtual environment), we have brought our campus building into virtual reality. Visitors from anywhere in the world can congregate synchronously in the personification of an avatar in the SARUP virtual campus. The virtual campus can hold lectures, exhibitions, and studio reviews along with serving as a virtual commons and hang-out spot.
