The Innovative Cities Lecture Series

Mapping Racism and Resistance in Milwaukee County: Racial covenants and the struggle for housing in the Urban North presentation by Dr. Anne Bonds, Department of Geography University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Lecture Summary:

The Mapping Racism and Resistance in Milwaukee County (MRR-MKE) project involves collaborative mapping and rhetorical analysis of racial covenants and resistance to them in Milwaukee County. We examine the historical geography of racial covenants in Milwaukee County, considering how racial covenants operated in the specific urban and racial context of Milwaukee, together with other discriminatory housing policies and racialized patterns of development. As the project now turns to the transcription of racial covenants identified with Milwaukee County property records, I discuss the collaboration and collective work that will happen over the next year as we analyze and map the covenants.
