Video Lecture Summary
For more than three decades Mary Miss has reshaped the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, landscape design and installation art. Her projects explore how infrastructure can be better utilized by integrating art and sustainability, a guiding premise of her initiative CaLL, the City as Living Laboratory: Sustainability Made Tangible Through the Arts. She has articulated a vision of the public sphere where communal and private experiences co-exist. Her work is grounded in the context of a place, from which she constructs situations where the visitor becomes aware of the site’s history, its ecology, or aspects of the environment that have gone unnoticed. The individual viewer moving through the site, experiencing it in all of its configurations, becomes the primary focus.
