Information provided in the manual is based on relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/safety-health\/biosafety\/regulations-guidelines\/\">federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines<\/a>. This manual provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>General biosafety information and recommendations for work with pathogens, recombinant\/synthetic nucleic acids, and other biohazardous materials<\/li>\n<li>University requirements for training, equipment, and work practices based on materials used and risk levels<\/li>\n<li>Information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/ibc\/\">Institutional Biosafety Committee<\/a> submission and review process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"uwm-c-button\" href=\"https:\/\/panthers.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/r\/sites\/UWMBiosafetyWebsitePublic-Group\/Shared%20Documents\/Safety%20%26%20Health%20-%20Biosafety\/Biosafety%20Manual\/2017%20Biosafety%20Manual_v1.4.pdf?csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=6gF1av\">UWM Biosafety Manual [PDF]<\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Lab-Specific Biosafety Manual<\/h1>\n<p>All laboratories working with recombinant techniques and\/or biohazardous materials must have a <strong>Lab-Specific Biosafety Manual<\/strong> available in the lab at all times.<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e107dd4dffc\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Minimum Required Contents&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Minimum Required Contents<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e107dd4dffc\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\nLab-Specific Biosafety Manuals must, at minimum, include the following information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Copies of all active Biosafety Protocols and their approval letters from the Institutional Biosafety Committee<\/li>\n<li>Documentation of lab-specific training in the following areas:\n<ul>\n<li>Biological hazards in the lab<\/li>\n<li>Disinfection &amp; decontamination methods<\/li>\n<li>Proper use of equipment (e.g., biosafety cabinets, centrifuge safety cups, pipettes, flow cytometers)<\/li>\n<li>Personal protective equipment &amp; lab hygiene<\/li>\n<li>Biological spill response<\/li>\n<li>Exposure response<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Decontamination methods for all agents in use<\/li>\n<li>Biological spill &amp; exposure response procedures<\/li>\n<li>Documentation of annual biosafety manual review by all personnel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additional information may also need to be documented depending on biological materials in use. For example, your lab-specific biosafety manual may also include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan<\/li>\n<li>Agent-Specific Exposure Control Plans and\/or Pathogen Safety Data Sheets<\/li>\n<li>Permits and other compliance documentation<\/li>\n<li>Occupational health program records<\/li>\n<li>Vaccination offer \/ declination documentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e107dd4e0fa\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Lab-Specific Biosafety Manual Template&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Lab-Specific Biosafety Manual Template<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e107dd4e0fa\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>The UWM Biosafety Program has created a template that can be used to develop your lab&#8217;s Lab-Specific Biosafety Manual. However, use of this specific template is not required.
