They include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.<\/p>\n<h1>Working safely with biohazardous agents<\/h1>\n<p><strong><span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69fe161734f0a\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Understand the Risk Group of the agent\"    >Understand the Risk Group of the agent<\/span><div id=\"target-id69fe161734f0a\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UWM categorizes agents into Risk Groups as described in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/labs\/BMBL.html\"><em>Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/osp.od.nih.gov\/biotechnology\/nih-guidelines\/\"><em>NIH Guidelines<\/em><\/a>. Tables that outline the appropriate Risk Group for various agents can be found at the links below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/osp.od.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019_NIH_Guidelines.htm#_Toc3457093\"><em>NIH Guidelines<\/em> Appendix B: Classification of Human Etiologic Agents on the Basis of Hazard<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.absa.org\/Riskgroups\">ABSA International Risk Group Database<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/osp.od.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019_NIH_Guidelines.htm#_Toc3457202\"><\/a><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69fe161734f71\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Conduct a risk assessment\"    >Conduct a risk assessment<\/span><div id=\"target-id69fe161734f71\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use your risk assessment to determine the appropriate Biosafety Level for your work.\u00a0In your risk assessment, consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Inherent Hazards of the Agent:<\/em><\/strong> These are characteristics of the agent itself that are often considered in assigning the agent&#8217;s Risk Group, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to cause infection and\/or disease, severity of the associated disease, and availability of preventive measures or effective treatments<\/li>\n<li>Routes of transmission<\/li>\n<li>Infectious dose<\/li>\n<li>Environmental stability<\/li>\n<li>Host range<\/li>\n<li>Potential threats to local environment (e.g., exotic, invasive)<\/li>\n<li>Other genetic characteristics (e.g., antibiotic resistance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Hazards Associated with Lab Procedures:<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>These hazards are specific to the types of manipulations and procedures you will conduct with the agent in your lab. In particular, consider the following:\n<ul>\n<li>Quantity &amp; concentration of the agent to be used<\/li>\n<li>Aerosol- and\/or droplet-generating procedures &amp; equipment<\/li>\n<li>Use of sharps<\/li>\n<li>Use of live animals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Helpful resources to conduct your risk assessment include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/labs\/BMBL.html\">Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories &#8211; Centers for Disease Control &amp; Prevention<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/laboratory-biosafety-biosecurity\/pathogen-safety-data-sheets-risk-assessment.html\">Pathogen Safety Data Sheets &#8211; Public Health Agency of Canada<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/osp.od.nih.gov\/biotechnology\/nih-guidelines\/\">NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules<\/a><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69fe161734f95\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Submit your work for approval by the Institutional Biosafety Committee\"    >Submit your work for approval by the Institutional Biosafety Committee<\/span><div id=\"target-id69fe161734f95\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Principal Investigators or Instructors who wish to use biohazardous agents in their laboratories must submit their work for approval by the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/ibc\/\">Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Submit to the IBC online via iManager. <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/ibc\/biosafety-protocol\/\">Click here to access the submission system and submission instructions.<\/a> Fill out the form as completely as possible, and provide any additional pertinent information that may assist the committee in assessing risks associated with your work.<\/li>\n<li>The IBC will determine the final biosafety level appropriate for the work proposed. Work should not begin until IBC approval is granted.<\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69fe161734fb2\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Complete required training\"    >Complete required training<\/span><div id=\"target-id69fe161734fb2\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biosafety training is required for all individuals conducting research with biohazardous agents.
