{"id":9637,"date":"2026-08-12T17:35:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T22:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/publichealth\/?p=9637"},"modified":"2026-08-12T18:16:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T23:16:16","slug":"professor-amy-kalkbrenner-discusses-health-risks-of-wildfire-smoke-in-wisconsin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/publichealth\/professor-amy-kalkbrenner-discusses-health-risks-of-wildfire-smoke-in-wisconsin\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Amy Kalkbrenner Discusses Health Risks of Wildfire Smoke in Wisconsin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wildfire smoke has increasingly become part of summer in Wisconsin, bringing hazy skies, poor air quality and growing questions about what repeated smoke exposure could mean for public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/publichealth\/directory\/kalkbrenner-amy\/\">Amy Kalkbrenner, professor of Environmental Health Sciences<\/a> at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health, recently shared her expertise with <em>Door County Knock<\/em> for an in-depth story examining the effects of wildfire smoke on Door County residents, businesses and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story followed a period in mid-July when smoke from wildfires in Canada and Minnesota blanketed Door County and other parts of the Great Lakes region. Air quality reached hazardous levels, with a monitoring station in Green Bay recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 395 on July 16. AQI readings between 301 and 500 are considered hazardous for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI cannot overstate how bad the air quality was those days,\u201d Kalkbrenner told <em>Door County Knock<\/em>. \u201cIt was unsafe for anyone to be in for any length of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wildfire smoke can affect more than the lungs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kalkbrenner, an environmental epidemiologist, emphasized that the health effects of polluted air extend well beyond respiratory irritation. Because air pollution is largely invisible, people may underestimate the risks associated with breathing unhealthy air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research has linked air pollution exposure with a range of health concerns, including cardiovascular problems, developmental disorders, mental health conditions and premature death, in addition to respiratory illnesses. Wildfire smoke contains extremely small particles known as PM2.5, which can travel deep into the lungs and potentially enter the bloodstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kalkbrenner also noted that wildfire smoke may contain volatile compounds and metals in addition to the fine particles found in other forms of air pollution. Children can be particularly vulnerable to the effects of smoke exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-changing-air-quality-landscape\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A changing air-quality landscape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kalkbrenner told the publication that Wisconsin and other parts of the country are at an important turning point when it comes to air quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wildfires are becoming a larger contributor to worsening air quality as climate change contributes to hotter, drier conditions and an increased risk of larger and more intense fires. Drier forests in Canada can provide ample fuel for fires that ultimately send smoke hundreds of miles into Wisconsin and other parts of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Wisconsin residents, that creates a difficult reality. Summer is a time when people want to be outdoors exercising, visiting parks and beaches and enjoying the state&#8217;s relatively short stretch of warm weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want to live in a world where we\u2019re told you can\u2019t go outside, it\u2019s not safe to exercise, children can\u2019t play outside, and we need special devices to be inside,\u201d Kalkbrenner said. \u201cWisconsin summer is precious, we need it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, she cautioned that repeatedly framing climate change and wildfire smoke only in terms of &#8220;doom and gloom&#8221; can cause people to tune out.
