UWM\u2019s Zilber School of Public Health offers a BS in Public Health<\/a> that includes more than 18 public health major courses. We also offer three undergraduate Public Health courses that meet General Education Requirements (GER): PH 101, PH 303, and PH 306.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in this course will earn 3 Gen Ed credits in Social Sciences.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public health is concerned with the health of the community as a whole. A public health perspective views the health of a population as influenced by social, cultural, behavioral, biological, environmental, and economic factors. Public health researchers and practitioners work to prevent disease and promote health in populations through scientific research, policy development, and health education. In addition to examining the population health approach to public health, this course will present the principles of evidence-based public health and tools, provide an introduction to the history, science and principles of public health, and will provide an overview of the US health care system, as compared to health care systems in other developed countries. (3 credits).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PH 303:<\/strong> Climate Change, the Environment and Human Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Students in this course will earn 3 Gen Ed credits in Natural Sciences.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not your average Natural Science GER! It\u2019s a new class, taught by a professor in UWM\u2019s new Zilber School of Public Health. Learn how scientific concepts in biology, chemistry, and geology relate to disease rates and what societies can do to curb the effects of climate change on human health. Enroll in PH 303 today, and start thinking outside the box to create a healthier society worldwide. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PH 306: Adolescent Health and Development<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This class introduces students to a public health perspective on adolescent development, with a particular focus on risk prevention and health\/mental health promotion. Topics include risk and protective factors associated with drug use, sexuality, obesity, trauma, depression and violence. We will review and apply theories for understanding risk and promoting health among individuals and within communities. Strategies for preventing health problems will be discussed and students will work on health promotion projects. This course will emphasize the development of student writing skills and will include hands-on activities\/assignments. (3 credits) Students in this course will earn 3 Gen Ed credits in Social Sciences.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
