SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - The Human Elements of Health Data Visualization in an AI Obsessed World
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nAmanda Makulec\, MPH\nFounder | Viz Responsibly\nAdvisor | Data Visualization Society \nAs genAI tools reshape how many data visualizations are created\, health data requires more than just a human in the loop. Often\, we see ourselves or people we care about represented in those data sets\, sometimes from exceptionally challenging periods of illness or frustration navigating health care systems. \nThe human elements of health data require that we handle data with care\, taking into consideration: \n\nWho is represented in the data?\nWho is the messenger sharing the data?\nHow data may be (mis)understood and influence health behaviors?\n\nAbout the speaker: \nAmanda Makulec is a data visualization leader on a mission to help people make data meaningful. Over the past 15 years\, she’s worked in more than a dozen countries coaching teams\, designing data visualizations\, and building communities focused on communicating data effectively with an emphasis on health data visualization. \nAmanda is a founding board member and former Executive Director for the global Data Visualization Society\, author of Dashboards That Deliver\, and co-host of Chart Chat. You can follow her on LinkedIn and by subscribing to her Viz Responsibly newsletter. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - Strengths-based and Innovative Pathways to Address Maternal Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Presented by \nEmily Cramer\, PhD\nAssociate Professor\, Diederich College of Communication\nMarquette University \nA leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide\, preeclampsia is marked by the onset of high blood pressure during pregnancy\, usually in combination with signs of organ failure. Rather than focusing on the deficits and vulnerabilities associated with preeclampsia\, a strengths-based approach centers the capacities\, agency\, and cultural strengths of individuals in the context of the condition. When it comes to preeclampsia care\, a strengths-based approach recognizes that survivors possess valuable resources\, knowledge\, and adaptive interactional strategies that can drive positive change.  \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Weekly Seminar - Health/Data Disparities in Indian Country
DESCRIPTION:Health/Data Disparities in Indian Country\nPresented by Will Funmaker MBA\, MLT (ASCP)\nDirector\, Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC) \nHealth and data disparities in Indian Country remain significant\, with tribal communities experiencing higher rates of chronic diseases\, mental health challenges\, and limited access to quality health care. These disparities are exacerbated by historical trauma\, professional shortages\, and insufficient health data\, which often leads to underrepresentation in national health policies and research. The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC) works to bridge this gap by providing data collection\, analysis\, and technical assistance to Tribal communities\, ensuring that health decisions are informed by accurate and culturally relevant information. GLITEC collaborates with tribal nations to strengthen public health infrastructure\, support disease surveillance\, and advocate for data sovereignty. By fostering partnerships between tribes\, health agencies\, and policymakers\, GLITEC empowers tribal communities with the tools to improve health outcomes and achieve health equity. Through culturally responsive research and public health initiatives\, GLITEC continues to address disparities and enhance the well-being of Native populations. \nJoin us  to hear the latest in the research and practice of public health to support a just\, equitable\, healthy future for people\, communities\, and the environment in Milwaukee\, the state of Wisconsin\, and beyond. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Weekly Seminar - What will it take to end campus sexual violence?
DESCRIPTION:What will it take to end campus sexual violence? \nRose Hennessy Garza\, PhD\, MPH\nVisiting Assistant Professor\nZilber College of Public Health \nA landmark study in 1987 revealed self-reported rates of campus sexual violence to be much higher than those reported in official crime statistics. Despite numerous efforts across the decades\, sexual violence remains highly prevalent today\, disproportionately and inequitably impacting students already marginalized by intersecting forms of oppression. This seminar is informed by research and practice to highlight what it will take to eradicate campus sexual violence in the United States. Primary challenges and solutions will be explored and will focus on policy approaches\, training content and delivery\, research and system infrastructure\, and the commitment needed to create a campus environment where all students can thrive free from sexual violence. \nJoin us in a forum to hear the latest in the research and practice of public health to support a just\, equitable\, healthy future for people\, communities\, and the environment in Milwaukee\, the state of Wisconsin\, and beyond. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Weekly Seminar - Exploring the impact of Mutual Aid on Health and Well-Being of Transgender\, Nonbinary\, and Gender Diverse People\, Linda Wesp\, PhD\, Assistant Professor - School of Nursing
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the impact of Mutual Aid on Health and Well-Being of Transgender\, Nonbinary\, and Gender Diverse People \nPresented by Linda Wesp\, PhD\nAssistant Professor\nUWM School of Nursing \nStructural oppression and system failures have resulted in the need for community-driven interventions that address the multiple socio-structural causes of health inequities among transgender and gender diverse populations. Mutual aid initiatives are an effective strategy that build mobilization\, create community\, and meet people’s immediate health care needs. A defining characteristic of mutual aid is the awareness that the systems and structures in place\, such as the health care system\, are unable to meet these needs and have often created additional needs. Come to learn about mutual aid and our community-based participatory research study that has evaluated the impact of mutual aid on gender-affirming health care for transgender\, nonbinary\, and gender diverse people. \nJoin us in a forum to hear the latest in the research and practice of public health to support a just\, equitable\, healthy future for people\, communities\, and the environment in Milwaukee\, the state of Wisconsin\, and beyond. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Weekly Seminar - Power to the People: Evaluation Considerations for Public Health Liberation\, Dr. Monique Liston\, UBUNTU Research & Evaluation
DESCRIPTION:Power to the People: Evaluation Considerations for Public Health Liberation  \nPresented by Dr. Monique Liston\nFounder\, Chief Strategist & Joyful Militant\nUBUNTU Research and Evaluation \nUnderstanding and aligning with Public Health Liberation (PHL)\, an emerging framework aimed at advancing health equity by addressing systemic inequities within the public health economy\, is essential for culturally responsive and equitable evaluation. At the core of PHL is the public health economy\, a complex interplay of economic\, political\, and social forces that shape the health and well-being of communities that highlights the ongoing competition for resources and power\, where morality and self-interest often collide\, perpetuating health inequities. Evaluators have a critical role in assessing and transforming public health within this dynamic context. The lecture will introduce the key principles of Public Health Liberation and explore how evaluators can engage with the public health economy to promote data liberation and mitigate data violence against Black communities. Participants will gain essential knowledge to navigate the intersections of evaluation\, equity\, and the structural drivers of health\, leaving with actionable strategies to foster liberation in public health. All (data) power to the people! \nJoin us to hear the latest in the research and practice of public health to support a just\, equitable\, healthy future for people\, communities\, and the environment in Milwaukee\, the state of Wisconsin\, and beyond. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.
