There are two awards available for Zilber School of Public Health dissertators that will be disbursed in the Spring 2022 semester: ZSPH Dissertator Award and the Chancellor’s Graduate Student Award.

For Spring 2022, the ZSPH Dissertator’s scholarship will be awarded to 1-2 students for up to $5,000 total. The Chancellor’s Award will be awarded to 4-7 students up to $20,000 dollars total. For this round, both of these awards are meant to cover the costs of your dissertation research.

Please work with your faculty advisor to develop the research plan and associated budget. The application requires a description of your research project and a detailed budget. Your application should be between 500-600 words. In addition to your proposed plan and budget, please include short answers to the questions below.

  1.  What year are you in your PhD Studies?
  2. Have you completed your preliminary exam, and if not, when do you plan to sit for the exam?
  3. Have you successfully proposed your dissertation, and if not, when do you plan to propose?
  4. What is your expected date of graduation?
  5. Do you currently have other sources of funding for your studies and/or PhD research?

*In your application, please indicate whether you are applying for the Chancellor’s Award, the ZSPH Dissertator Award, or both.

**It is also important to note that for the Chancellor’s Award, research-related travel (must be presenting) and publication fees ARE allowed. These two expenses are NOT allowed for the ZSPH Dissertator Award.

Please email your application materials to Analise Sandoval at analise@uwm.edu by February 1, 2022 (11:59 p.m.) for consideration. Include in the subject line, “Zilber Dissertation Awards” so Analise can easily search for and compile the applications.

Here are a few things to keep in mind about these awards:

  • This award is intended to help PhD candidates pay for the expense of completing their dissertation research. Therefore, it’s important to link your proposed budget to your dissertation goals and your hoped for research outcomes.
  • In addition to one or two paragraphs of narrative, please include a budget with specific line items for expected expenses.
  • These awards will not cover tuition.
