SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - Getting Started with AI in Research: Practical Tools and Workflows
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nLaleh Jamshidi\, PhD\, Assistant Professor\, Biostatistics\nZilber College of Public Health \nJake Luo\, PhD\, Associate Professor\, Health Care Informatics\nZilber College of Public Health \nArtificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly useful tool for supporting many aspects of the research process. This seminar provides a practical introduction to AI tools and workflows that can assist with tasks such as literature review\, academic writing\, creating scientific illustrations\, etc. Drawing on our own exploration of these tools\, we will share practical examples\, discuss their potential benefits and limitations\, and highlight considerations for their responsible use. The seminar is intended for faculty\, staff\, and students who are interested in exploring how AI can be thoughtfully incorporated into their research workflow. \nAbout the presenters:\n \nJake Luo’s research interest lies in data-driven predictive analysis using machine learning-based algorithms and technologies\, such as data mining\, natural language processing and knowledge representation and modeling. He is interested in investigating how these computing technologies can be used to improve health care by providing intelligent decision support for clinicians\, medical researchers\, patients\, and policymakers. \nLuo’s active research programs involve developing innovative heath data science technologies for knowledge discovery\, adapting machine learning algorithms to enhance clinical data processing\, implementing collaborative team science initiatives to improve health services and research\, and creating intelligent clinical informatics tools to support evidence-based decision making. \nLaleh Jamshidi is an Assistant Professor in Biostatistics in Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Prior to her current appointment\, she was a Research Associate and Post Doctoral Fellow in Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment (CIPSRT) at the University of Regina in Canada. She is so passionate about collaboration in applying statistical methods in public health\, both methodologically and theoretically. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams. \n

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - Intersection of Infection Prevention and Public Health: The Shared Goals of Improving Community Health Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:  \nPaula Pintar\, MSN\, RN\, APRN-CNS\, AL-CIP\, FAPIC (she/her/hers)\nInfection Preventionist\, Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Prevention Program \nIn this presentation\, Pintar will cover a brief background of the Wisconsin Department of Public Health and the evolution of the HAI Prevention Program\, and the broad scope of services provided. She will also touch on the evolution of Infection Prevention. Then\, we will examine why and how infection prevention is so important and explore the multiple intersections with public health focusing on improving community health outcomes. \nAbout the presenter:\nPaula Pintar\, MSN\, RN\, APRN-CNS\, AL-CIP\, FAPIC has been in healthcare for more than two decades. She is a Regional Infection Preventionist with the Wisconsin Department of Public Health\, Healthcare Associated Infection program. In this role she supports seven southeast counties as a consultant to LTHDs\, congregate care settings\, and acute care hospitals. In addition\, she supports communicable disease outbreaks\, conducts Legionella prevention water tours\, and partners with the Legionellosis team on clinical investigations. Paula has come full circle in her career\, working for many years in intensive care\, PACU\, and Home Health & Hospice prior going back to school to obtain her advanced practice nursing degree and transitioning into infection prevention. During this time\, she not only worked in the front lines but lead infection prevention and quality departments in community\, Veteran’s\, and Academic health care centers. It is during this time she published her work in peer reviewed journals and during the COVID-19 pandemic conducted research on the experiences of the infection preventionist during the pandemic. She has presented multiple abstracts at state and national conferences focused on infection prevention and unique populations such as the MRSA outbreaks among recruits at a U.S. naval base. She has been active in her professional organization\, APIC\, at the state and national levels serving in leadership roles and is currently finishing up on her board of directors’ term for APIC national. She is a member of the Wisconsin Healthcare Engineers Association (WHEA) serving as their infection prevention education specialist. In her spare time\, she spends time with her husband and adult children\, her four-legged children that include a Springer Spaniel\, two horses\, a donkey\, barn cats\, and chickens.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - PFAs ("Forever Chemicals") and Cardiometabolic Disease in Urban U.S. Communities
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nChibuzor Abasilim\, Assistant Professor\, Epidemiology\nZilber College of Public Health \nFor population groups facing elevated exposure to environmental contaminants due to occupation\, residence and sociocultural factors\, the risk and burden of cardiometabolic conditions including diabetes and hypertension may be elevated. PFAS (forever chemicals) are widespread contaminants that are increasingly linked to cardiometabolic disease risk. This talk will focus on ongoing work evaluating PFAS exposures in Black adults enrolled in the Chicago Multiethnic Prevention and Surveillance Study. Abasilim will present findings on PFAS related hypertension and select biological pathways underlying PFAS toxicity. Future directions for this work will also be discussed\, with a particular focus on Milwaukee County. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar: Cancer Clusters - Facts and Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nBecky Bowen\, MPH\, MS\, Healthcare-Associated Infections Epidemiologist\nWisconsin Department of Health Services \nHollywood tells us that chemicals in our environment are major causes of cancer but is this accurate? Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States yet many people misunderstand what the major cancer risk factors are. Much emphasis is placed on contaminants in our food\, our water\, and our air\, but how much do these influence your risk of developing cancer? This seminar will explore what is known about environmental cancer clusters\, what is not\, and how to tell the difference between fact and fiction. \nAbout the presenter:\nBecky Bowen is the Healthcare-Associated Infections epidemiologist with the state of Wisconsin where she works on data analysis projects around antibiotic stewardship and hospital infections. Becky has been in epidemiology for six years and has worked in a variety of areas including rural health\, non-lead heavy metal poisonings\, and cancer cluster investigations. Her work on retinoblastoma was recently published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine Focus. In addition\, Becky spent seven years in cancer research and taught biology at local community colleges. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale\, a Master of Science degree in Molecular Carcinogenesis from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center\, and a Master of Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In her spare time\, Becky enjoys spending time with her husband\, Lewis\, and sons Sean and Henry\, as well as baking\, quilting\, and reading. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually via Teams.
