SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - Co-Creating Change: Advancing Public Health Through Community-Driven HIV and Substance Use Research
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: \nMikaela Becker\, Director of Prevention Research\, Vivent Health \nThis presentation explores how authentic partnerships with community members can transform HIV and substance use research\, ensuring that studies reflect local priorities\, lived experiences\, and the realities of those most affected. Drawing from the experience of building a research program within a community-based organization\, we will share lessons learned about fostering trust\, advancing community voices\, and creating meaningful change through sustained collaboration and advocacy. Attendees will gain practical insights into how community-driven research can generate more equitable\, impactful\, and sustainable solutions to improve health outcomes for populations disproportionately affected by HIV and substance use. \nAbout the presenter: \nMikaela Becker is the Director of Prevention Research at Vivent Health where she oversees HIV prevention and harm reduction focused research projects nationally. She earned her Masters of Public Health in Public Policy and Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health\, and her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of Alabama. Prior to her work with Vivent Health\, Mikaela worked in substance use prevention focusing on youth and community coalitions. Regardless of the setting\, Mikaela believes that public health should be done with people\, and not to people\, and that meaningful community engagement is integral to project\, program\, and policy success. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.
