DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nKaty Murphy\, MS\, RD\, Director of Community Health\, Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers \nClaudia Albarado\, Lead Outreach Program OCHIN Epic Coordinator\, Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers \nLead is a toxic metal that is especially harmful to young children. Despite the known effects\, many in Milwaukee continue to be exposed\, and last year\, over a thousand children under the age of six in the City met the definition for being lead poisoned. This session will highlight the work of Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers’ lead program including: the history of lead in Milwaukee and the program’s development\, innovative approaches used to decrease lead poisoning rates on Milwaukee’s near South Side and current successes and challenges in lead poisoning prevention in our community. \nAbout the presenters: \nKaty Murphy is a Registered Dietitian with over 15 years of experience in community nutrition and public health programs. She currently serves as the Director of Community Health at Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers\, a Federally Qualified Health Center on Milwaukee’s South side. Katy studied Nutrition at the University of Minnesota\, and moved to Milwaukee shortly after\, where she received a B.S. in Dietetics at Mount Mary University.\n\nClaudia Albado is the Lead Outreach Program OCHIN Epic Coordinator at Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers. Her work focuses on community outreach\, education and lead screening. SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - Protecting and Promoting the Health and Safety of Wisconsinites
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nKirsten Johnson\, Secretary\, Wisconsin Department of Health Services \nWith a population of nearly six million\, Wisconsin has a wide range of needs when it comes to caring for the health and well-being of its residents. This discussion will highlight recent statewide achievements and what lies ahead as we look at the challenges we face to improve health outcomes in every corner of the state. Secretary Johnson will share her unique experiences and perspective working at the local\, state\, and national levels of public health and how everyone’s work connects to improve the health of Wisconsinites. \nAbout the presenter:  \nKirsten Johnson started her public health career entertaining Malians with a local health education radio show while evicting snakes from her mud hut as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali\, West Africa. From evaluating risk of Covid-19 infection in schools and nursing homes (and the risk of infection in S.E.A. Hamsters at the county fair)\, dressing Evil Knievel to prevent skiing injury\, negotiating acceptable drinking water E.coli levels at the USGA\, U.S. Open (the answer is zero\, there are no acceptable E.coli levels) to passing 12-month post-partum Medicaid coverage for Wisconsin women\, Kirsten has over 20 years of experience as a public health leader in complex local\, state\, national\, and international organizations. She was appointed Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services by Governor Evers in 2023. Previously she served as the health commissioner for the city of Milwaukee\, most notably during the pandemic. Prior to serving the city of Milwaukee\, Kirsten was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow and Congressman Ron Kind’s health policy advisor. Kirsten led the Washington Ozaukee Public Health Department for more than a decade as the director and health officer\, overseeing the merger of the two counties’ health departments. Kirsten is a proud University of Wisconsin Badger and has a master’s degree in public health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

Drawing from the experience of building a research program within a community-based organization\, we will share lessons learned about fostering trust\, advancing community voices\, and creating meaningful change through sustained collaboration and advocacy. Attendees will gain practical insights into how community-driven research can generate more equitable\, impactful\, and sustainable solutions to improve health outcomes for populations disproportionately affected by HIV and substance use. \nAbout the presenter: \nMikaela Becker is the Director of Prevention Research at Vivent Health where she oversees HIV prevention and harm reduction focused research projects nationally. She earned her Masters of Public Health in Public Policy and Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health\, and her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of Alabama. Prior to her work with Vivent Health\, Mikaela worked in substance use prevention focusing on youth and community coalitions. Rather than treating misinformation as a knowledge deficit\, it examines the social and psychological forces that shape belief and trust\, and what they mean for public health communication. \nAbout the presenter:\nMatthew Facciani is a social scientist at the Yale School of Public Health\, where he studies how people form beliefs\, evaluate information\, and navigate an increasingly complex media environment. His research examines misinformation\, media literacy\, social networks\, political polarization\, trust\, and artificial intelligence\, with a focus on what these dynamics mean for public health communication. He is the author of the award-winning book\, Misguided: Where Misinformation Starts\, How It Spreads\, and What to Do About It (Columbia University Press)\, host of Misguided: The Podcast and the Misguided newsletter\, and a science communicator working to bridge research and everyday conversations about information\, trust\, and technology. \nBeyond academia\, Matthew is a science communicator dedicated to making complex social science research accessible to broad audiences. He writes for Psychology Today\, has spoken at national conferences\, and hosts the Misguided newsletterand podcast\, where he explores how social and psychological forces shape the way people process information. His book\, Misguided: Where Misinformation Starts\, How It Spreads\, and What to Do About It (Columbia University Press\, 2025)\, received the 2025 Choice Outstanding Academic Title award and a 2026 Nautilus Book Award. In response\, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) have partnered to bring a public health approach to veteran suicide prevention initiatives at WDVA. During this seminar\, Dr. Emer will discuss these initiatives and detail how data from the Wisconsin Violent Death Reporting System is driving suicide prevention efforts at WDVA and related veteran suicide prevention research at the DHS. \nAbout the presenter: \nLindsay Emer\, PhD\, is a Research Scientist in the Division of Public Health at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS)\, where she oversees the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) and State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS). She collaborates with Vital Records\, Coroners/Medical Examiners\, and Law Enforcement to collect data for the CDC on homicides\, suicides\, legal interventions\, all firearm deaths\, and drug overdose deaths statewide. Lindsay holds a PhD in Public Health and has research experience in HIV/AIDS\, substance use disorders\, sexual assault\, sex trafficking\, childhood lead exposure\, and firearm violence. Her prior work includes consulting drug courts on program evaluation for the National Center for State Courts\, providing training and technical assistance to overdose fatality and sexual assault review teams across Wisconsin\, and facilitating the Milwaukee Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Reviews in partnership with the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission. Before graduate school\, she spent six years in community-based roles at the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin and Meta House\, a substance use disorder treatment center for women. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nBen Weston\, MD\, MPH\, FAEMS\nProfessor at Medical College of Wisconsin and\nChief Health Policy Advisor for Milwaukee County \nImproving community health requires more than identifying problems. It requires bringing together data\, evidence\, partnerships\, and public systems to turn what we know into action. In this moderated conversation\, Dr. Ben Weston will discuss Milwaukee County’s approach to some of the community’s most pressing public health challenges\, including drug overdose\, motor vehicle crashes\, violence\, suicide\, and cardiac arrest. Drawing on his roles at the intersection of medicine\, emergency medical services\, public health\, and county government\, the discussion will explore how data can identify opportunities for intervention\, how partnerships can translate evidence into practice\, and what we can learn from both successes and ongoing challenges. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Weston is a Professor with Tenure in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He serves as Chief Health Policy Advisor for Milwaukee County working to enhance the health of one million citizens. In addition\, Dr. Weston is the Chief Medical Director for the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management\, directing medical services for 15 fire departments with 120\,000 annual patient encounters. Through strategic planning\, effective communication and crisis management\, Dr. Weston’s local\, regional and national leadership has centered on community and partner engagement to advance population health and organizational achievement. He was recently among seven selected fellows to the National Academy of Medicine. He has been featured on MSNBC\, CNN\, BBC\, and in The New York Times and provided medical oversight for the NFL\, NBA\, MLB\, Indycar\, and USA Triathlon. He practices clinically in the emergency department at Froedtert Hospital\, a level 1 trauma center and is an NIH funded researcher with interests in prehospital care\, resuscitation\, health equity\, and public health surveillance. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

This seminar provides a practical introduction to AI tools and workflows that can assist with tasks such as literature review\, academic writing\, creating scientific illustrations\, etc. Drawing on our own exploration of these tools\, we will share practical examples\, discuss their potential benefits and limitations\, and highlight considerations for their responsible use. The seminar is intended for faculty\, staff\, and students who are interested in exploring how AI can be thoughtfully incorporated into their research workflow. \nAbout the presenters:\n \nJake Luo’s research interest lies in data-driven predictive analysis using machine learning-based algorithms and technologies\, such as data mining\, natural language processing and knowledge representation and modeling. He is interested in investigating how these computing technologies can be used to improve health care by providing intelligent decision support for clinicians\, medical researchers\, patients\, and policymakers. \nLuo’s active research programs involve developing innovative heath data science technologies for knowledge discovery\, adapting machine learning algorithms to enhance clinical data processing\, implementing collaborative team science initiatives to improve health services and research\, and creating intelligent clinical informatics tools to support evidence-based decision making. \nLaleh Jamshidi is an Assistant Professor in Biostatistics in Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Prior to her current appointment\, she was a Research Associate and Post Doctoral Fellow in Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment (CIPSRT) at the University of Regina in Canada. DESCRIPTION:Presented by:  \nPaula Pintar\, MSN\, RN\, APRN-CNS\, AL-CIP\, FAPIC (she/her/hers)\nInfection Preventionist\, Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Prevention Program \nIn this presentation\, Pintar will cover a brief background of the Wisconsin Department of Public Health and the evolution of the HAI Prevention Program\, and the broad scope of services provided. She will also touch on the evolution of Infection Prevention. Then\, we will examine why and how infection prevention is so important and explore the multiple intersections with public health focusing on improving community health outcomes. \nAbout the presenter:\nPaula Pintar\, MSN\, RN\, APRN-CNS\, AL-CIP\, FAPIC has been in healthcare for more than two decades. She is a Regional Infection Preventionist with the Wisconsin Department of Public Health\, Healthcare Associated Infection program. In this role she supports seven southeast counties as a consultant to LTHDs\, congregate care settings\, and acute care hospitals. In addition\, she supports communicable disease outbreaks\, conducts Legionella prevention water tours\, and partners with the Legionellosis team on clinical investigations. Paula has come full circle in her career\, working for many years in intensive care\, PACU\, and Home Health & Hospice prior going back to school to obtain her advanced practice nursing degree and transitioning into infection prevention. During this time\, she not only worked in the front lines but lead infection prevention and quality departments in community\, Veteran’s\, and Academic health care centers. It is during this time she published her work in peer reviewed journals and during the COVID-19 pandemic conducted research on the experiences of the infection preventionist during the pandemic. She has presented multiple abstracts at state and national conferences focused on infection prevention and unique populations such as the MRSA outbreaks among recruits at a U.S. naval base. She has been active in her professional organization\, APIC\, at the state and national levels serving in leadership roles and is currently finishing up on her board of directors’ term for APIC national. She is a member of the Wisconsin Healthcare Engineers Association (WHEA) serving as their infection prevention education specialist. In her spare time\, she spends time with her husband and adult children\, her four-legged children that include a Springer Spaniel\, two horses\, a donkey\, barn cats\, and chickens.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - PFAs ("Forever Chemicals") and Cardiometabolic Disease in Urban U.S. Communities
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nChibuzor Abasilim\, Assistant Professor\, Epidemiology\nZilber College of Public Health \nFor population groups facing elevated exposure to environmental contaminants due to occupation\, residence and sociocultural factors\, the risk and burden of cardiometabolic conditions including diabetes and hypertension may be elevated. PFAS (forever chemicals) are widespread contaminants that are increasingly linked to cardiometabolic disease risk. This talk will focus on ongoing work evaluating PFAS exposures in Black adults enrolled in the Chicago Multiethnic Prevention and Surveillance Study. Abasilim will present findings on PFAS related hypertension and select biological pathways underlying PFAS toxicity. Future directions for this work will also be discussed\, with a particular focus on Milwaukee County. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nBecky Bowen\, MPH\, MS\, Healthcare-Associated Infections Epidemiologist\nWisconsin Department of Health Services \nHollywood tells us that chemicals in our environment are major causes of cancer but is this accurate? Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States yet many people misunderstand what the major cancer risk factors are. Much emphasis is placed on contaminants in our food\, our water\, and our air\, but how much do these influence your risk of developing cancer? This seminar will explore what is known about environmental cancer clusters\, what is not\, and how to tell the difference between fact and fiction. \nAbout the presenter:\nBecky Bowen is the Healthcare-Associated Infections epidemiologist with the state of Wisconsin where she works on data analysis projects around antibiotic stewardship and hospital infections. Becky has been in epidemiology for six years and has worked in a variety of areas including rural health\, non-lead heavy metal poisonings\, and cancer cluster investigations. Her work on retinoblastoma was recently published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine Focus. In addition\, Becky spent seven years in cancer research and taught biology at local community colleges. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale\, a Master of Science degree in Molecular Carcinogenesis from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center\, and a Master of Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In her spare time\, Becky enjoys spending time with her husband\, Lewis\, and sons Sean and Henry\, as well as baking\, quilting\, and reading. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually via Teams.
