SUMMARY:Dissertation Defense Public Seminar: Presented By Lydia Post
DESCRIPTION:Adverse childhood experiences\, their social determinants\, and risk of young onset breast cancer subtypes in non-Hispanic Black and White women. \nYoung-onset breast cancer (YOBC) is the leading cause of cancer death among young non-Hispanic Black and White women in the U.S. and there are socioeconomic and racial disparities in YOBC subtype incidence. Few modifiable risk factors have been identified to inform the prevention of YOBC or mitigate disparities in risk. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been hypothesized to increase breast cancer risk via social and physiological pathways\, but no studies have yet evaluated associations between ACEs and YOBC subtypes. Using data from a population-based sample of young non-Hispanic Black and White women\, this research evaluates: 1) how social determinants shape risk of ACEs\, 2) how ACEs affect body size and whether social determinants modify these associations\, and 3) if ACEs are associated with risk of YOBC subtypes and if adult body size – an established risk factor for certain YOBC subtypes – mediates associations. This research suggests one mechanism\, ACEs\, through which disparities in YOBC subtype risk may be perpetuated. \nJoin on Zoom

SUMMARY:Dissertation Defense Public Seminar: Assessing the toxicity of antimicrobial compounds chloroxylenol and benzethonium chloride in developing zebrafish
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Wuttiporn Rerkamnuaychoke\nPhD Candidate\, Zilber College of Public Health \nChloroxylenol (CHX) and benzethonium chloride (BEC) are two replacement antimicrobial compounds being used after the ban of triclosan and triclocarban by the Food and Drug Administration in 2016. These two replacement compounds are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as disinfectants for use against COVID-19\, especially in hospital settings. This has led to a recent and extensive use of these two compounds resulting in the potential for increased exposure to human populations in various regions of the world as well as to aquatic ecosystems. Here\, the consequences of CHX and BEC exposure on neuronal and neural crest cell development in the zebrafish model (Danio rerio) will be presented. My results show that CHX exposure can dramatically impact neuronal development. In contrast\, both CHX and BEC can alter neural crest cell development.

DESCRIPTION:Using Latent Class Analysis and the Social-Ecological Model to Predict Membership in Latent Classes of Bullying\, Victimization\, and Bystander Behavior and Examining Associations with the Derived Classes Among High School Students. \nPresented by Shailja Tiku\, PhD Candidate \nIn this quantitative study\, the underlying classes of bullies\, victims\, and bystanders among a sample of high school students in a mid-western state in United States were identified and described. Further\, using the social-ecological model\, the individual-\, family-\, peer-\, and school-level factors associated with bullying were predicted as they relate to the identified classes. Data from the Dane County (Wisconsin) Youth Assessment Survey of 2018 was used in this study. Several individual-\, family-\, peer-\, and school-level factors were associated with the latent classes of bullying behavior. The findings of this study can help to understand the risk and protective factors associated with high school students’ involvement in bullying dynamics. \nJoin on Microsoft Teams

Mutual aid initiatives are an effective strategy that build mobilization\, create community\, and meet people’s immediate health care needs. A defining characteristic of mutual aid is the awareness that the systems and structures in place\, such as the health care system\, are unable to meet these needs and have often created additional needs. DESCRIPTION:What will it take to end campus sexual violence? \nRose Hennessy Garza\, PhD\, MPH\nVisiting Assistant Professor\nZilber College of Public Health \nA landmark study in 1987 revealed self-reported rates of campus sexual violence to be much higher than those reported in official crime statistics. Despite numerous efforts across the decades\, sexual violence remains highly prevalent today\, disproportionately and inequitably impacting students already marginalized by intersecting forms of oppression. This seminar is informed by research and practice to highlight what it will take to eradicate campus sexual violence in the United States. DESCRIPTION:Health/Data Disparities in Indian Country\nPresented by Will Funmaker MBA\, MLT (ASCP)\nDirector\, Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC) \nHealth and data disparities in Indian Country remain significant\, with tribal communities experiencing higher rates of chronic diseases\, mental health challenges\, and limited access to quality health care. These disparities are exacerbated by historical trauma\, professional shortages\, and insufficient health data\, which often leads to underrepresentation in national health policies and research. The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC) works to bridge this gap by providing data collection\, analysis\, and technical assistance to Tribal communities\, ensuring that health decisions are informed by accurate and culturally relevant information. GLITEC collaborates with tribal nations to strengthen public health infrastructure\, support disease surveillance\, and advocate for data sovereignty. By fostering partnerships between tribes\, health agencies\, and policymakers\, GLITEC empowers tribal communities with the tools to improve health outcomes and achieve health equity. Rather than focusing on the deficits and vulnerabilities associated with preeclampsia\, a strengths-based approach centers the capacities\, agency\, and cultural strengths of individuals in the context of the condition. Through her leadership at DCWS\, she has helped strengthen Milwaukee’s violence prevention infrastructure by supporting community violence intervention programs\, building partnerships across city agencies and community organizations\, managing major public investments\, and expanding trauma-informed approaches that center prevention and healing. \nKarin has played a key role in ensuring stability and continuity within the department during periods of transition\, helping maintain critical partnerships and prevention initiatives that serve neighborhoods most impacted by violence. \nHer commitment to this work is also deeply personal. In 2011\, Karin lost her son\, Andrew\, to gun violence. That experience strengthened her resolve to dedicate her life to preventing violence and supporting families and communities impacted by tragedy. \nToday\, Karin continues to lead efforts that focus on prevention\, healing\, and opportunity\, working alongside community partners to build safer and healthier neighborhoods across Milwaukee. \nYasmine M. Morton LPC\nInterim Operations Manager at City of Milwaukee Department of Community Wellness & Safety \nYasmine is a licensed mental health professional who focuses on unresolved childhood trauma\, grief/loss\, anxiety\, depression and offender reintegration. Yasmine has worked in the social services sector over the past serving children\, youth and families. Yasmine received her undergraduate degree from Marian University of Fon du Lac\, WI in 2013 and her Masters of Education in Professional Counseling from Concordia University of Mequon\, WI in 2018. Yasmine’s passion is to help others grow through seeking mental clarity. \nJulien Phifer \nCrisis Response Coordinator/Community Project Liaison at City of Milwaukee Department of Community Wellness & Safety \nJulien earned his MPH from the Zilber College of Public Health at UW-Milwaukee. Ebert\, DDS\nDirector of Dental Services\nCommunity Smiles \nDr. Sidney Ebert is the Director of Dental Services at Community Smiles Dental\, a non-profit organization that provides high-quality dental care to underserved populations throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.  Community Smiles Dental focuses on programs providing oral health services to children\, pregnant patients\, and patients with special healthcare needs who are insured by Medicaid or have income that falls at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and are uninsured.  \nWisconsin Medicaid members face significant barriers to accessing oral health care.  Despite Medicaid providing comprehensive coverage for dental services\, the majority of its members never receive comprehensive dental care. \nThis presentation will highlight: \n\nPopulations experiencing the highest oral health disparities\nBarriers to oral health access\nStrategies for improving oral health access in Wisconsin\n\nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

Since 2004\, he has conducted environmental and biomedical science collaborations with the Great Lakes Native American tribes. \nDr. Dellinger will discuss his past and ongoing work on reducing exposures to environmental contaminants in foods. DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nKaty Murphy\, MS\, RD\, Director of Community Health\, Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers \nClaudia Albarado\, Lead Outreach Program OCHIN Epic Coordinator\, Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers \nLead is a toxic metal that is especially harmful to young children. Despite the known effects\, many in Milwaukee continue to be exposed\, and last year\, over a thousand children under the age of six in the City met the definition for being lead poisoned. This session will highlight the work of Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers’ lead program including: the history of lead in Milwaukee and the program’s development\, innovative approaches used to decrease lead poisoning rates on Milwaukee’s near South Side and current successes and challenges in lead poisoning prevention in our community. \nAbout the presenters: \nKaty Murphy is a Registered Dietitian with over 15 years of experience in community nutrition and public health programs. She currently serves as the Director of Community Health at Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers\, a Federally Qualified Health Center on Milwaukee’s South side. Katy studied Nutrition at the University of Minnesota\, and moved to Milwaukee shortly after\, where she received a B.S. in Dietetics at Mount Mary University.\n\nClaudia Albado is the Lead Outreach Program OCHIN Epic Coordinator at Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers. Her work focuses on community outreach\, education and lead screening. DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nKirsten Johnson\, Secretary\, Wisconsin Department of Health Services \nWith a population of nearly six million\, Wisconsin has a wide range of needs when it comes to caring for the health and well-being of its residents. This discussion will highlight recent statewide achievements and what lies ahead as we look at the challenges we face to improve health outcomes in every corner of the state. Secretary Johnson will share her unique experiences and perspective working at the local\, state\, and national levels of public health and how everyone’s work connects to improve the health of Wisconsinites. \nAbout the presenter:  \nKirsten Johnson started her public health career entertaining Malians with a local health education radio show while evicting snakes from her mud hut as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali\, West Africa. From evaluating risk of Covid-19 infection in schools and nursing homes (and the risk of infection in S.E.A. Hamsters at the county fair)\, dressing Evil Knievel to prevent skiing injury\, negotiating acceptable drinking water E.coli levels at the USGA\, U.S. Open (the answer is zero\, there are no acceptable E.coli levels) to passing 12-month post-partum Medicaid coverage for Wisconsin women\, Kirsten has over 20 years of experience as a public health leader in complex local\, state\, national\, and international organizations. She was appointed Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services by Governor Evers in 2023. Previously she served as the health commissioner for the city of Milwaukee\, most notably during the pandemic. Prior to serving the city of Milwaukee\, Kirsten was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow and Congressman Ron Kind’s health policy advisor. Kirsten led the Washington Ozaukee Public Health Department for more than a decade as the director and health officer\, overseeing the merger of the two counties’ health departments. Kirsten is a proud University of Wisconsin Badger and has a master’s degree in public health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

Attendees will gain practical insights into how community-driven research can generate more equitable\, impactful\, and sustainable solutions to improve health outcomes for populations disproportionately affected by HIV and substance use. \nAbout the presenter: \nMikaela Becker is the Director of Prevention Research at Vivent Health where she oversees HIV prevention and harm reduction focused research projects nationally. She earned her Masters of Public Health in Public Policy and Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health\, and her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of Alabama. Prior to her work with Vivent Health\, Mikaela worked in substance use prevention focusing on youth and community coalitions. Rather than treating misinformation as a knowledge deficit\, it examines the social and psychological forces that shape belief and trust\, and what they mean for public health communication. \nAbout the presenter:\nMatthew Facciani is a social scientist at the Yale School of Public Health\, where he studies how people form beliefs\, evaluate information\, and navigate an increasingly complex media environment. His research examines misinformation\, media literacy\, social networks\, political polarization\, trust\, and artificial intelligence\, with a focus on what these dynamics mean for public health communication. He is the author of the award-winning book\, Misguided: Where Misinformation Starts\, How It Spreads\, and What to Do About It (Columbia University Press)\, host of Misguided: The Podcast and the Misguided newsletter\, and a science communicator working to bridge research and everyday conversations about information\, trust\, and technology. \nBeyond academia\, Matthew is a science communicator dedicated to making complex social science research accessible to broad audiences. He writes for Psychology Today\, has spoken at national conferences\, and hosts the Misguided newsletterand podcast\, where he explores how social and psychological forces shape the way people process information. SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - How a Public Health Partnership to Support Wisconsin Veterans Paved the Way for Veteran Suicide Prevention Research
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nLindsay Emer\, PhD\, Research Scientist\nDivision of Public Health\, Wisconsin Department of Health Services \nVeterans in Wisconsin die by suicide at a much higher rate than non-veterans. In response\, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) have partnered to bring a public health approach to veteran suicide prevention initiatives at WDVA. During this seminar\, Dr. Emer will discuss these initiatives and detail how data from the Wisconsin Violent Death Reporting System is driving suicide prevention efforts at WDVA and related veteran suicide prevention research at the DHS. \nAbout the presenter: \nLindsay Emer\, PhD\, is a Research Scientist in the Division of Public Health at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS)\, where she oversees the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) and State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS). She collaborates with Vital Records\, Coroners/Medical Examiners\, and Law Enforcement to collect data for the CDC on homicides\, suicides\, legal interventions\, all firearm deaths\, and drug overdose deaths statewide. Lindsay holds a PhD in Public Health and has research experience in HIV/AIDS\, substance use disorders\, sexual assault\, sex trafficking\, childhood lead exposure\, and firearm violence. Her prior work includes consulting drug courts on program evaluation for the National Center for State Courts\, providing training and technical assistance to overdose fatality and sexual assault review teams across Wisconsin\, and facilitating the Milwaukee Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Reviews in partnership with the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission. Before graduate school\, she spent six years in community-based roles at the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin and Meta House\, a substance use disorder treatment center for women. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nBen Weston\, MD\, MPH\, FAEMS\nProfessor at Medical College of Wisconsin and\nChief Health Policy Advisor for Milwaukee County \nImproving community health requires more than identifying problems. It requires bringing together data\, evidence\, partnerships\, and public systems to turn what we know into action. In this moderated conversation\, Dr. Ben Weston will discuss Milwaukee County’s approach to some of the community’s most pressing public health challenges\, including drug overdose\, motor vehicle crashes\, violence\, suicide\, and cardiac arrest. Drawing on his roles at the intersection of medicine\, emergency medical services\, public health\, and county government\, the discussion will explore how data can identify opportunities for intervention\, how partnerships can translate evidence into practice\, and what we can learn from both successes and ongoing challenges. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Weston is a Professor with Tenure in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He serves as Chief Health Policy Advisor for Milwaukee County working to enhance the health of one million citizens. In addition\, Dr. Weston is the Chief Medical Director for the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management\, directing medical services for 15 fire departments with 120\,000 annual patient encounters. Through strategic planning\, effective communication and crisis management\, Dr. Weston’s local\, regional and national leadership has centered on community and partner engagement to advance population health and organizational achievement. He was recently among seven selected fellows to the National Academy of Medicine. He has been featured on MSNBC\, CNN\, BBC\, and in The New York Times and provided medical oversight for the NFL\, NBA\, MLB\, Indycar\, and USA Triathlon. He practices clinically in the emergency department at Froedtert Hospital\, a level 1 trauma center and is an NIH funded researcher with interests in prehospital care\, resuscitation\, health equity\, and public health surveillance. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nLaleh Jamshidi\, PhD\, Assistant Professor\, Biostatistics\nZilber College of Public Health \nJake Luo\, PhD\, Associate Professor\, Health Care Informatics\nZilber College of Public Health \nArtificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly useful tool for supporting many aspects of the research process. This seminar provides a practical introduction to AI tools and workflows that can assist with tasks such as literature review\, academic writing\, creating scientific illustrations\, etc. Drawing on our own exploration of these tools\, we will share practical examples\, discuss their potential benefits and limitations\, and highlight considerations for their responsible use. The seminar is intended for faculty\, staff\, and students who are interested in exploring how AI can be thoughtfully incorporated into their research workflow. \nAbout the presenters:\n \nJake Luo’s research interest lies in data-driven predictive analysis using machine learning-based algorithms and technologies\, such as data mining\, natural language processing and knowledge representation and modeling. He is interested in investigating how these computing technologies can be used to improve health care by providing intelligent decision support for clinicians\, medical researchers\, patients\, and policymakers. \nLuo’s active research programs involve developing innovative heath data science technologies for knowledge discovery\, adapting machine learning algorithms to enhance clinical data processing\, implementing collaborative team science initiatives to improve health services and research\, and creating intelligent clinical informatics tools to support evidence-based decision making. \nLaleh Jamshidi is an Assistant Professor in Biostatistics in Joseph J. SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - PFAs ("Forever Chemicals") and Cardiometabolic Disease in Urban U.S. Communities
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nChibuzor Abasilim\, Assistant Professor\, Epidemiology\nZilber College of Public Health \nFor population groups facing elevated exposure to environmental contaminants due to occupation\, residence and sociocultural factors\, the risk and burden of cardiometabolic conditions including diabetes and hypertension may be elevated. PFAS (forever chemicals) are widespread contaminants that are increasingly linked to cardiometabolic disease risk. This talk will focus on ongoing work evaluating PFAS exposures in Black adults enrolled in the Chicago Multiethnic Prevention and Surveillance Study. Abasilim will present findings on PFAS related hypertension and select biological pathways underlying PFAS toxicity. Future directions for this work will also be discussed\, with a particular focus on Milwaukee County. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar: Cancer Clusters - Facts and Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nBecky Bowen\, MPH\, MS\, Healthcare-Associated Infections Epidemiologist\nWisconsin Department of Health Services \nHollywood tells us that chemicals in our environment are major causes of cancer but is this accurate? Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States yet many people misunderstand what the major cancer risk factors are. Much emphasis is placed on contaminants in our food\, our water\, and our air\, but how much do these influence your risk of developing cancer? This seminar will explore what is known about environmental cancer clusters\, what is not\, and how to tell the difference between fact and fiction. \nAbout the presenter:\nBecky Bowen is the Healthcare-Associated Infections epidemiologist with the state of Wisconsin where she works on data analysis projects around antibiotic stewardship and hospital infections. Becky has been in epidemiology for six years and has worked in a variety of areas including rural health\, non-lead heavy metal poisonings\, and cancer cluster investigations. Her work on retinoblastoma was recently published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine Focus. In addition\, Becky spent seven years in cancer research and taught biology at local community colleges. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale\, a Master of Science degree in Molecular Carcinogenesis from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center\, and a Master of Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In her spare time\, Becky enjoys spending time with her husband\, Lewis\, and sons Sean and Henry\, as well as baking\, quilting\, and reading. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually via Teams.
