DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nMatthew Facciani\, PhD — Associate Research Scientist\nYale School of Public Health \nDrawing on social psychology\, network science\, and trust research\, this talk explores how identity\, social networks\, and information environments shape what we believe and why we trust some sources over others. Rather than treating misinformation as a knowledge deficit\, it examines the social and psychological forces that shape belief and trust\, and what they mean for public health communication. \nAbout the presenter:\nMatthew Facciani is a social scientist at the Yale School of Public Health\, where he studies how people form beliefs\, evaluate information\, and navigate an increasingly complex media environment. His research examines misinformation\, media literacy\, social networks\, political polarization\, trust\, and artificial intelligence\, with a focus on what these dynamics mean for public health communication. He is the author of the award-winning book\, Misguided: Where Misinformation Starts\, How It Spreads\, and What to Do About It (Columbia University Press)\, host of Misguided: The Podcast and the Misguided newsletter\, and a science communicator working to bridge research and everyday conversations about information\, trust\, and technology. \nBeyond academia\, Matthew is a science communicator dedicated to making complex social science research accessible to broad audiences. He writes for Psychology Today\, has spoken at national conferences\, and hosts the Misguided newsletterand podcast\, where he explores how social and psychological forces shape the way people process information. His book\, Misguided: Where Misinformation Starts\, How It Spreads\, and What to Do About It (Columbia University Press\, 2025)\, received the 2025 Choice Outstanding Academic Title award and a 2026 Nautilus Book Award. SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - How a Public Health Partnership to Support Wisconsin Veterans Paved the Way for Veteran Suicide Prevention Research
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nLindsay Emer\, PhD\, Research Scientist\nDivision of Public Health\, Wisconsin Department of Health Services \nVeterans in Wisconsin die by suicide at a much higher rate than non-veterans. In response\, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) have partnered to bring a public health approach to veteran suicide prevention initiatives at WDVA. During this seminar\, Dr. Emer will discuss these initiatives and detail how data from the Wisconsin Violent Death Reporting System is driving suicide prevention efforts at WDVA and related veteran suicide prevention research at the DHS. \nAbout the presenter: \nLindsay Emer\, PhD\, is a Research Scientist in the Division of Public Health at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS)\, where she oversees the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) and State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS). She collaborates with Vital Records\, Coroners/Medical Examiners\, and Law Enforcement to collect data for the CDC on homicides\, suicides\, legal interventions\, all firearm deaths\, and drug overdose deaths statewide. Lindsay holds a PhD in Public Health and has research experience in HIV/AIDS\, substance use disorders\, sexual assault\, sex trafficking\, childhood lead exposure\, and firearm violence. Her prior work includes consulting drug courts on program evaluation for the National Center for State Courts\, providing training and technical assistance to overdose fatality and sexual assault review teams across Wisconsin\, and facilitating the Milwaukee Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Reviews in partnership with the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission. Before graduate school\, she spent six years in community-based roles at the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin and Meta House\, a substance use disorder treatment center for women. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.

SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar - From Data to Action: Building a Healthier Milwaukee County
DESCRIPTION:Presented by:\nBen Weston\, MD\, MPH\, FAEMS\nProfessor at Medical College of Wisconsin and\nChief Health Policy Advisor for Milwaukee County \nImproving community health requires more than identifying problems. It requires bringing together data\, evidence\, partnerships\, and public systems to turn what we know into action. In this moderated conversation\, Dr. Ben Weston will discuss Milwaukee County’s approach to some of the community’s most pressing public health challenges\, including drug overdose\, motor vehicle crashes\, violence\, suicide\, and cardiac arrest. Drawing on his roles at the intersection of medicine\, emergency medical services\, public health\, and county government\, the discussion will explore how data can identify opportunities for intervention\, how partnerships can translate evidence into practice\, and what we can learn from both successes and ongoing challenges. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Weston is a Professor with Tenure in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He serves as Chief Health Policy Advisor for Milwaukee County working to enhance the health of one million citizens. In addition\, Dr. Weston is the Chief Medical Director for the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management\, directing medical services for 15 fire departments with 120\,000 annual patient encounters. Through strategic planning\, effective communication and crisis management\, Dr. Weston’s local\, regional and national leadership has centered on community and partner engagement to advance population health and organizational achievement. He was recently among seven selected fellows to the National Academy of Medicine. He has been featured on MSNBC\, CNN\, BBC\, and in The New York Times and provided medical oversight for the NFL\, NBA\, MLB\, Indycar\, and USA Triathlon. He practices clinically in the emergency department at Froedtert Hospital\, a level 1 trauma center and is an NIH funded researcher with interests in prehospital care\, resuscitation\, health equity\, and public health surveillance. \nThe seminar can also be attended virtually on Teams.
