SUMMARY:Zilber College of Public Health Seminar: Your Zip Code Shouldn't Decide Your Destiny - Health Equity\, Public Health\, and the Careers Built to Close the Gap
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: \nChristopher J. Simenz\, PhD\, MS\nDirector\, Master of Public Health Program\nMedical College of Wisconsin \nDiscover how the places where people live\, work and learn can shape their health and life expectancy—and why improving health requires looking beyond doctors and hospitals. Using Milwaukee data\, interactive activities and real-world examples\, Christopher Simenz introduces key concepts in health equity\, examines the social and economic factors that drive health inequities\, and highlights public health careers that work “upstream” to address them. \nAbout the presenter:\nChristopher J Simenz\, PhD\, MS is an Associate Professor and Associate Director for the MPH and DrPH Programs at the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Institute for Health & Equity and Department of Family & Community Medicine. For over 20 years\, Simenz has collaborated with partners in community-engaged research\, policy\, and systems change focused on the social determinants of health (SDOH)\, public and community health\, rooted in the role of physical activity and wellness in health. Together with his colleagues\, he has created and operationalized dozens of policy and systems changes focused on equitable health improvement in partnership with a broad range of people\, from children to senior refugees\, with an impact reaching hundreds of thousands of children\, adolescents\, and families in Milwaukee and SE Wisconsin. Over the past 2 years\, he has worked with medical residents and programs to provide trainees face-to-face community engagement experiences with Milwaukeeans experiencing homelessness and struggling with addiction issues in efforts to remove barriers to healthcare access\, meet patients where they exist\, and train more empathetic and culturally humble practitioners.
