Lead is a toxic metal that is especially harmful to young children. Despite the known effects, many in Milwaukee continue to be exposed, and last year, over a thousand children under the age of six in the City met the definition for being lead poisoned. This session will highlight the work of Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers’ lead program including: the history of lead in Milwaukee and the program’s development, innovative approaches used to decrease lead poisoning rates on Milwaukee’s near South Side and current successes and challenges in lead poisoning prevention in our community.
