August Spotlight – Officer Nathan Wiste

Hi, I’m Officer Wiste. I’ve been with the department for almost 3 years.

I became a police officer because every day is different, and you have the chance to make a difference in people’s lives.

August is National Traffic Awareness Month, and every year more than one million people become victims of fatal traffic accidents. We ask that you be mindful and abide by traffic laws to keep yourself and others safe.

Road Safety Tips:

  • Stay off your phone
  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Be observant of your surroundings (i.e. pedestrians in the road, road signs, traffic lights, etc.)
  • Watch your speed

What traffic violations do we see most often around campus?

  • Failure to stop for stop signs, solid red traffic lights, and flashing red traffic lights
  • Failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalk
  • Operating in the bike lane
  • Inattentive driving

As a pedestrian – what rules do I need to follow?

  • Pedestrians can only cross at intersections with traffic lights (i.e. intersections of E. Kenwood Blvd and N. Maryland Ave, E. Hartford Ave and N. Maryland Ave, etc.) when they have a “walk” light.
  • If pedestrians cross a roadway at a crosswalk that is not controlled by traffic lights (i.e. the crosswalk between Lubar Hall and the Architecture and Urban Planning Building), motorists must yield the right of way to pedestrians provided that the pedestrian not have entered in such a manner as to make it difficult for the motorist to yield. This is why it is important to not be looking at your phone when crossing roadways.
  • Per Wisconsin State Statute 346.25, pedestrians crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked or unmarked crosswalk shall yield the right of way to all vehicles upon the roadway.
