SUMMARY:Solar Eclipse Viewing Party
DESCRIPTION:Solar Eclipse Viewing Party\n\nMonday\, April 8\, 2024\nUWM Union Ballroom & Spaights Plaza (MAP) \n\n1:00 – 3:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFREE and Open to the Public!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t miss your chance to view the solar eclipse on April 8\, 2024— it will be the last one visible in the U.S. until 2044! The Sun will reach 90% totality in Milwaukee on April 8. On that day\, the Moon will block 90% of the Sun as the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and the three align perfectly. \n\nStop by the UWM Union Ballroom and Spaights Plaza to enjoy free food\, music\, crafts\, and of course viewing the solar eclipse (MAP). Students\, employees\, and members of the public are invited to stop by between classes or meetings\, or make a whole day out of it. This is a rain or shine event! Peak visibility is at approximately 2:00 pm on April 8\, 2024.  \n\nWeather permitting\, view the eclipse through eclipse glasses and telescopes outside. Special glasses will be available for safely viewing the solar eclipse.  \nEnjoy free pizza\, cookies\, and beverages \nWatch a NASA live stream of the total eclipse  \nTake a photo in our photo station or with Pounce \nGet your craft on: Decorate your eclipse glasses and make galaxy slime and shrinky-dink keychains with the Studio Arts & Crafts Center \nLearn how to cross stitch a space-themed pattern with the Women’s Resource Center \nMake a mindfulness jar with the Student Health and Wellness Center \nGet your face painted with Campus Activities Board\n\nThose planning to travel out of town for the eclipse (or perhaps unable to join us on the day of the eclipse) can grab a free pair of eclipse glasses at the planetarium show “Prepare for the Solar Eclipse” on Friday\, April 5. Guided by Director Jean Creighton\, this show dives into the basics of how eclipses work and what we learn from them.   \n  \n \n \nEclipse Safety\n\nNever look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse without proper eye protection.\nUse certified solar viewing glasses or solar filters to protect your eyes when observing the eclipse.\nDo not use homemade filters or regular sunglasses\, as they do not provide sufficient protection.\nSupervise children and ensure they also use proper eye protection.\nIf using a telescope or binoculars\, ensure they are fitted with solar filters specifically designed for safe solar viewing.\nDo not attempt to view the eclipse through unfiltered camera lenses\, smartphones\, or other optical devices.\nAvoid looking at the sun indirectly through reflective surfaces like water\, mirrors\, or shiny metal objects.\nTake breaks from viewing the eclipse to rest your eyes and prevent eye strain.\nIf you experience discomfort or vision problems during or after viewing the eclipse\, seek medical attention immediately.\nBe cautious of wildlife behavior during eclipses\, as some animals may become disoriented or behave unpredictably.\nPlan your viewing location in advance\, considering safety and accessibility. Avoid areas with potential hazards or obstacles.\nBe mindful of your surroundings and stay aware of any changes in lighting or temperature during the eclipse.\nFollow local safety guidelines and recommendations provided by reputable sources such as astronomy organizations or government agencies.\nEnjoy the eclipse safely and share the experience with others\, but prioritize eye safety above all else.
