SUMMARY:CGCA Seminar: Sam Gralla
DESCRIPTION:Sam Gralla\, University of Arizona\nSpacetime Physics of Force Free Magnetospheres\nPhysics – Room 481 \nThe spectacular displays of pulsars and quasars are likely energized by rotating compact objects (neutron stars and black holes\, respectively) through their plasma magnetospheres. When the magnetic field energy dominates that of the plasma\, the system can be described by force-free electrodynamics (FFE)\, a non-linear\, autonomous set of equations for the electromagnetic field on the compact object spacetime. Despite its simple covariant formulation\, FFE has primarily been studied in 3+1 frameworks\, where spacetime is split into space and time in an arbitrary way. I will describe new results\, techniques and insights from an emerging research program taking a spacetime-geometrical approach to the physics of force-free magnetospheres.

SUMMARY:CGCA Seminar: Larry Price
DESCRIPTION:Larry Price\, Caltech\nPhysics – Room 481 \nThe next five years will be an exciting time for gravitational-wave physics: We expect the first direct detections of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Virgo. Even more exciting is the prospect of observing the same event in both gravitational-wave and electromagnetic channels simultaneously. In this talk\, I’ll review past efforts to make such joint detections a reality as well as recent results from a large-scale simulation campaign aimed at setting expectations for electromagnetic follow-up of binary neutron stars during the first two years of Advanced LIGO and Virgo.

SUMMARY:CGCA Seminar: Aaron Geller
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Geller\, Northwestern University\nThe Dynamical Environments of Open Star Clusters \nMost stars (and presumably planets) are born in star clusters. However\, star clusters can be hostile environments\, where close stellar encounters can be frequent and can have violent consequences\, including direct stellar collisions. Such encounters can dramatically alter stellar and planetary systems\, and can produce exotic stars that define new pathways in stellar evolution. Open clusters are particularly valuable to our understanding of these processes due to their accessibility to both comprehensive ground-based observations and full-scale sophisticated N-body simulations. Indeed\, the combination of both our observations and N-body simulations is beginning to reveal a highly accurate and detailed picture of the stellar dynamical environment of open clusters. In this talk\, I will discuss the impact of these dynamical processes on the observed characteristics of binary stars and planetary systems\, and the origins of various exotic stellar populations.

SUMMARY:CGCA Seminar: Richard Townsend
DESCRIPTION:Richard Townsend\, UW-Madison\nMESA & GYRE: Stellar Astrophysics for the People\nPhysics – Room 481 \nMESA (Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics) is a numerical code for modeling the structure and evolution of all types of stellar objects\, from brown dwarfs through to the most massive stars in the Universe. It is available to everyone under an open source license\, and since its release in 2011 has drawn an impressive following in the stellar astrophysics community. GYRE (acronym pending) is a complementary open source code for calculating the oscillation frequencies of models produced by MESA and other stellar evolution codes. By comparing these eigenfrequencies against the oscillation spectrum of a real star (observed\, e.g.\, by the Kepler satellite) one can place constraints on the structure of the star — the technique of ‘asteroseismology’. In the past year\, GYRE has been integrated into MESA so that this process can be largely automated. \nIn this presentation I’ll give an overview of the physics\, numerics and capabilities of MESA and GYRE. I’ll discuss the communities of practice that have sprung up around these codes\, and describe how these communities are being further nurtured. I’ll then present some of the exciting projects enabled by the codes\, including topics such as observational signatures of core helium flashes; stellar probes of dark-matter physics; pre-supernova winds due to neutrino losses; angular momentum transport by internal gravity waves; surface nuclear burning on accreting neutron stars; and the evolution of white-dwarf merger products.

SUMMARY:Condensed Matter Physics Talk: Yuxuan Wang
DESCRIPTION:Charge Orders and Symmetry Breaking in Underdoped Cuprates\nYuxuan Wang\, Physics PhD Student\, UW-Madison\nPhysics – Room 481 \nRecent experiments in STM\, neutron scattering\, and x-ray have provided strong evidence that incommensurate static charge orders with momenta (Q\,0) and (0\,Q) exist in underdoped cuprates. In the same doping range and at higher\ntemperatures\, there is evidence for broken rotational symmetry and broken time-reversal symmetry. In this talk\, I will present a theoretical study to explain the existence and doping dependence of the charge order. I will then discuss the interplay between different charge order parameters. Using a Ginzburg-Landau analysis\, I show that rotational symmetry and time-reversal symmetry are both broken in the ground state. \nMoreover\, going beyond a mean-field analysis\, I show that these discrete symmetries actually become broken at higher temperatures than the charge order onset temperature. I argue that such a state with broken discrete symmetries is a candidate for the enigmatic pseudogap in the cuprates and provides a “missing link” in understanding the cuprate physics.

SUMMARY:CGCA Seminar: Jax Sanders - Locking the Advanced LIGO Interferometers
DESCRIPTION:Locking the Advanced LIGO Interferometers\nJax Sanders\, University of Michigan\nPhysics – Room 481 \nAbstract: The goal of the Advanced LIGO interferometric gravitational-wave detectors is to achieve the first direct detection of gravitational waves on Earth. The detectors are designed to measure strains as low at 4 x 10^-24/ root Hz. This sensitivity requires the use of optical cavities that must be kept on resonance with a locking system to predictably and robustly operate the interferometer at resonance. The arms are locked with the arm-length stabilization system\, while the central Michelson interferometer is locked with a modulation technique using third harmonics. This method has resulted in the successful locking of the Advanced LIGO detector\, which has been brought to an operating point where detecting gravitational waves is feasible.
