SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium - Sabine Botha
DESCRIPTION:Bringing XFEL Science to the Laboratory: Commissioning the Compact X-ray Light Source at Arizona State University\nSabine Botha\, Research Assistant Professor\, Department of Physics\nArizona State University \nCompact accelerator-driven X-ray sources are emerging as a new class of laboratory-scale facilities capable of delivering capabilities traditionally available only at large national user facilities. At Arizona State University\, the Compact X-ray Light Source (CXLS) is currently undergoing commissioning\, while its successor\, the Compact X-ray Free Electron Laser (CXFEL)\, is under construction. Together\, these instruments aim to bring ultrashort\, high-brightness X-ray pulses into the university laboratory\, enabling new opportunities in structural biology\, medical imaging\, atomic\, molecular and optical physics\, and the study of condensed matter and quantum materials. \nIn this talk\, I will present the current status of commissioning experiments at CXLS\, including protein crystallography and time-resolved materials experiments. I will discuss our first macromolecular crystallography measurements and successful protein structure determination\, as well as ongoing efforts to establish time-resolved diffraction capabilities for probing ultrafast structural dynamics in materials. \nThese unique X-ray sources produce data streams that differ substantially from those encountered at traditional synchrotrons or XFEL facilities\, requiring new approaches to data processing and analysis. To address these challenges\, we are developing dedicated data analysis tools for CXLS and CXFEL. These tools include AI/ML-based optics alignment\, crystal hit finding\, automated diffraction image classification and sorting\, noise suppression strategies for weak diffraction signals\, and analysis pipelines for small-angle X-ray scattering. These experimental and computational developments aim to enable real-time experimental feedback and scalable offline analysis\, ultimately helping establish compact X-ray sources as powerful and accessible platforms for next-generation X-ray science. \nAcknowledgements: This material is based on work supported by the National Science Foundation Bio Directorate under midscale research infrastructure Grants 2153503 and 1935994.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium - Nicolas Yunes
DESCRIPTION:Uncovering Extreme Matter When Gravity Waves\nNicolas Yunes\, Bob Uyetani Professor in Physics\nUniversity of Illinois Urbana-Champaign \nNeutron stars contain matter at extreme densities and low temperatures that cannot be reproduced together in terrestrial experiments. Their collisions offer a way to study this matter through gravitational waves. In this colloquium\, I will discuss how tidal deformation connects gravitational-wave measurements to stellar structure\, and how approximate universal relations help overcome degeneracies in these measurements. I will then explore the connections between microscopic nuclear interactions and macroscopic stellar properties\, asking what observations can tell us about matter deep inside neutron stars. A neutron star’s response does not just depend on its equilibrium structure\, but also on how rapidly it is driven\, how its constituents relax toward equilibrium\, and how phase boundaries respond to perturbations. These effects connect dynamical tides and dissipation to the underlying matter physics. I will distinguish what observations already constrain from the signatures that remain difficult to measure\, and discuss the prospects for learning more about dense matter when gravity waves.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium - Chavdar Slavov
DESCRIPTION:Light-driven Molecular Transformations Captured by Ultrafast Spectroscopy\nDr. Chavdar Slavov\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Chemistry\nUniversity of South Florida \nFemtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy reveals the excited-state pathways and chromophore dynamics that transform light absorption into photochemical and biological function. Using phytochromes\, I will illustrate how the protein environment controls chromophore isomerization\, which in turn initiates structural changes that regulate biological signaling. Examples of synthetic photoswitches will further demonstrate how molecular motions and interactions direct competing excited-state pathways toward productive or nonproductive photochemistry. Finally\, I will introduce photopharmacology and show how artificial photoswitches can reversibly control biologically active molecules with light. Together\, these studies demonstrate how understanding excited-state dynamics bridges photochemistry and biophysics and informs the design of functional photoresponsive systems.
