DESCRIPTION:Light-driven Molecular Transformations Captured by Ultrafast Spectroscopy\nDr. Chavdar Slavov\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Chemistry\nUniversity of South Florida \nFemtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy reveals the excited-state pathways and chromophore dynamics that transform light absorption into photochemical and biological function.  Using phytochromes\, I will illustrate how the protein environment controls chromophore isomerization\, which in turn initiates structural changes that regulate biological signaling.  Examples of synthetic photoswitches will further demonstrate how molecular motions and interactions direct competing excited-state pathways toward productive or nonproductive photochemistry.  Finally\, I will introduce photopharmacology and show how artificial photoswitches can reversibly control biologically active molecules with light.  Together\, these studies demonstrate how understanding excited-state dynamics bridges photochemistry and biophysics and informs the design of functional photoresponsive systems.

DESCRIPTION:Altermagnets:  A New Technologically Relevant Class of Quantum Magnets\nDaniel Agterberg\nProfessor\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee \nMagnetism underpins much of our current information technology.  It also derives purely from quantum mechanics.  Traditionally\, discussion emphasizes two classes of magnets: usual ferromagnets\, which underly data storage devices\, and antiferromagnets\, in which magnetic moments adopt an up-down structural motif.  Recently\, a new class of magnets\, altermagnets\, has generated tremendous interest.  This class mixes properties of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets in a way that is promising for future applications.    \nIn this talk\, after introducing and discussing the quantum mechanical origins of traditional classes of magnetism\, I will turn to altermagnetism to highlight our current understanding of these materials and discuss how this understanding is providing a new lens for future research in quantum magnetism.\n.
