4:00-5:30pm \u2014 Guest lecture by Dr. Jed Atkins, Dean of the School of Civic Life and Leadership at UNC-Chapel Hill<\/p>\n

5:30\u20137:30pm \u2014 Dinner with facilitated dialogue at each table<\/p>\n

America is polarizing faster than any other modern democracy\u2014and public trust in our universities is low. Yet our colleges and universities are especially well-positioned to offer a civic education that equips students to work through difference and arrive at better solutions to problems. In this timely and thought-provoking talk, Dean Atkins explores how civic discourse\u2014the practice of deliberating with others as fellow members of a shared community\u2014can be taught and practiced on campus. Drawing from real-life stories in the classroom and beyond, he shows how higher education may equip students to live, learn, and listen as members of our pluralistic democracy.<\/p>\n
