Between 1972 and 1984, he held various academic positions at the University of Pennsylvania, UNAM (Mexico), the University of Auckland (New Zealand), the University of Paris, and the University of M\u00fcnster. He came to UW-Milwaukee in 1984 and became Professor in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Fabrizio\u2019s research trajectory began in contemporary metaphysics and philosophy of language.\u00a0 His Italian translation of Quine\u2019s\u00a0<em>Word and Object<\/em>\u00a0was published as\u00a0<em>Parola e oggetto<\/em>\u00a0(1970) while he was still a graduate student.\u00a0 His PhD thesis (1972) dealt with modal semantics and determinate names.\u00a0 \u201cAvailable Properties\u201d (1986) and his ground-breaking\u00a0<em>Philosophical Review<\/em>\u00a0paper (co-authored with Adam Morton, also regrettably recently deceased), \u201cModal Realism: The Poisoned Pawn\u201d (1976), are very much papers in contemporary philosophy.\u00a0 His work then gradually turned to historical excavation of the roots of modal metaphysics, first in the work of Leibniz \u2013 with several important papers in<em>\u00a0Studia Leibnitiana<\/em>\u00a0on essentialism, superessentialism, and compossibility from the mid-1970s onward \u2013 and later in the work of Duns Scotus, which increasingly occupied Fabrizio\u2019s scholarly attention from 2000 on and which led to another set of important papers in medieval philosophy, most notably \u201cThe Independence of the Possible According to Scotus\u201d, which appeared in the 2005 proceedings of the septcentennial Scotus conference,\u00a0<em>Duns Scot \u00e0 Paris 1302-2002<\/em>.\u00a0 After his retirement in 2014, he continued to publish papers and to work on a book manuscript on Duns Scotus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Fabrizio-retirement.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2328\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Fabrizio-retirement-300x174.jpg\" alt=\"retirement party\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Fabrizio-retirement-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Fabrizio-retirement-768x445.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Fabrizio-retirement.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Fabrizio\u2019s work consisted in exceptionally close readings of texts and arguments.\u00a0 He read \u00a0several languages (English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian) and was a skillful reader of the Latin used by Scotus and his commentators.\u00a0 He was the recipient of several awards for his work, including a Humboldt Research Fellowship, and his work was honored at a conference,\u00a0<em>Themes from Mondadori<\/em>, held at McGill University in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>His scholarly reputation helped the department to grow what was to become a premier MA program at UW-Milwaukee, to which Fabrizio contributed by teaching, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, courses in metaphysics and history of philosophy (especially Medieval Philosophy).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Sitting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2327 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Sitting-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"sitting in office\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Sitting-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Sitting-768x567.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/02\/Sitting.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Fabrizio had many and diverse interests outside of philosophy.\u00a0 He possessed detailed knowledge of the areas that interested him and held strong opinions about what was good and bad in them.\u00a0 In games and sports, he loved chess, football (the Premier League variety), basketball, and snooker.\u00a0 In art, he loved Mannerism (especially the work of Bronzino); in cinema, he was a huge fan of Peckinpah\u2019s movies, but also of more popular movies like John Carpenter\u2019s or movies featuring Peter Sellars.\u00a0 His musical tastes ranged from Bach and Corelli to Sigur Ros and Dylan. His knowledge and love of literature was immense and ranged from Jorge Luis Borges (whom he read in the original), Brian O\u2019Nolan, and James Kelman; to modern poetry from T.S. Eliot, through the Beats, and John Ashbery; and to horror writers like H.P.
