Comparison of Analysis Techniques for Assessing Oropharyngeal Swallow from Videofluoroscopy

Health Professions & Sciences (College of) / Rehabilitation Sciences & Technology (School of)

Description

This study consists of comparing four methods for analysis of videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) which are used to diagnosis persons who might have problems swallowing. Analysis methods to be compared include the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile, Swallowtail Advanced VFSS Measurement Software, Vallecular Residue Ratio Scale, and Normalized Residue Ratio Scale.

Tasks and Responsibilities

1) Student will be trained in each of the analysis methods
2) Student will apply each method to a series of archived videofluorosopic studies
3) Student will work with mentor on statistical analysis of the data
4) Student must complete this work in the Swallow Physiology Laboratory. This research cannot be completed remotely.

Desired Qualifications

1) Student must be Communication Sciences and Disorders Intended or Admitted to the major, or Non-degree Special Student in Communication Sciences and Disorders
2) Student must have an interest in working with adult populations with swallowing disorders
3) Student must complete Human Subjects Research training for biomedical research
