This course provides an introduction to human language and linguistics, which is the scientific study of language. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to understand the social dimensions of language use, and the diversity of different languages across the world; how humans use the vocal tract to produce speech sounds; the basic concepts of phonology, morphology, and syntax; how children acquire language, how signed languages work, what experimental techniques are used to investigate language; how language differs from animal communication, and what language issues arise in courtroom cases.
