NIH and NSF both require the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/sciencv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SciENcv<\/a> to prepare biosketches, as well as other federal agencies. Foundation and industry sponsors may also have specific requirements for developing biosketches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/sciencv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SciENcv<\/a> to help you develop your biosketch and automatically format it according to agency requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-budget-development\">Budget Development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As of July 7, 2025&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/officeofresearch\/proposal-resources\/ramp\/\">RAMP<\/a>&nbsp;has replaced WISPER and our budget development tool. Budgets should be primarily built in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/officeofresearch\/proposal-resources\/ramp\/\">RAMP<\/a>. However there are some sponsors and budget types that require the tool, so it will continue to be updated with current rates and information.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>One of the differences between RAMP and the budget tool is inflation of the fringe rate. In order to get the numbers to match exactly, you will need to change the fringe rates in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/officeofresearch\/proposal-resources\/ramp\/\">RAMP<\/a>&nbsp;to match the inflated fringe rates in the budget tool (rates are inflated by 1% per year).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p><strong>Tuition Remission Rate for Research and Project Assistants (33% or greater)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p>One semester or summer: $4,600 Academic year or annual: $9,200<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/officeofresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/577\/budget-development-tool_rev-20260313.xlsx\">Budget Development Tool (XLSX)<\/a><br><em>(Updated 03\/13\/2026)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If you have questions about translating information from the budget tool to RAMP, please contact your<\/em><br><em><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/officeofresearch\/proposal-resources\/pre-award-assignments\/\">Pre-Award Specialist\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-cost-sharing-and-matching-funds\">Cost-Sharing and Matching Funds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cost-sharing is the portion of the total project costs that is covered by&nbsp;UWM&nbsp;and\/or third parties. Examples of cost-shared contributions include personnel, time, effort, travel costs, and facilities. If a project requires cost-sharing or matching funds, discuss the commitment with your chair, dean, and\/or division head. Cost-sharing commitments must be documented appropriately in the proposal to avoid delays in proposal submission and\/or award acceptance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the project includes a subrecipient that will provide cost-sharing, the subrecipient must provide an institutional commitment letter that describes the proposed cost-sharing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information is provided in the <a href=\"https:\/\/panthers.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/r\/sites\/OOR-DL\/Office%20of%20Research%20Handbook\/Office%20of%20Research%20Handbook.pdf?csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=OzMC2X\">Office of Research Handbook (PDF)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-data-management-and-sharing-plans\">Data Management and Sharing Plans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many federal sponsors require Principal Investigators (PIs) to include with their proposal a plan that describes how the data generated from the funded project will be accessed, stored, managed, and shared. PIs can use the free <a href=\"https:\/\/dmptool.org\/\">DMPTool<\/a> to develop sponsor-specific plans, and the UWM&nbsp;Libraries provides host of <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.uwm.edu\/c.php?g=119286&amp;p=778010\">resources and strategies <\/a>for managing research data. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-material-transfer-agreements\">Material Transfer Agreements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When research involves the use of a biological material or other substances received from an outside entity, a Material Transfer Agreement may be required.&nbsp;UWM&nbsp;has a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/officeofresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/91\/2021\/04\/material-transfer-agreement.docx\">template&nbsp;(DOCX)<\/a>&nbsp;for outgoing Material Transfers. Incoming Material Transfer Agreements should be routed to&nbsp;the Office of Sponsored Programs&nbsp;for institutional review.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-principal-investigator-status\">Principal Investigator Status<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Only faculty and those academic staff with probationary or indefinite status may serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator (Co-PI) on a sponsored project. Others may serve as a&nbsp;PI&nbsp;or&nbsp;Co-PI&nbsp;only with permission from both the dean\/division head and the Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs.
