Financial Conflict of Interest in Public Health Service-Funded Research

Effective August 24, 2012, universities and other research institutions applying for or receiving research funding from the U.S. Public Health Service are required to comply with new federal conflict of interest regulations under 42 CFR, Part 50, Subpart F. The Public Health Service includes such major funding agencies as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Health Resources and Services Administration.

The new regulations include:

  • Lower financial disclosure thresholds.
  • Mandatory conflict of interest training (see Employee Development training below).
  • New public accessibility requirements.
  • Increased transparency for travel reimbursement.
