University-Neighborhood Initiative To Engage (UNITE)

Welcome to the neighborhood!

On behalf of the Neighborhood Housing Office (NHO), Dean of Students, and UWM Police (UWMPD), we welcome you to the UWM neighborhood; full of beautiful homes and friendly people in a diverse, caring, and an engaged community. Your neighbors will be a mix of both students and long-term residents, some of whom have called this community home for years. In collaboration with our on and off campus partners, on this page you will find exclusive goodies, discounts, and give-a-ways just for students!

The safety and health of our off-campus student community is incredibly important.  Below, we will provide an overview of information and resources available to students, including important updates about the university’s ongoing response to COVID-19.

You, and all UWM students, are responsible for preventing the spread of COVID-19 in our community, both on- and off-campus. It is critical to lead by example and take health and safety precautions seriously. Please review UWM’s COVID-Related Health and Safety Rules and campus policies before returning to campus. The Dean of Students Office will work with students to address student code of conduct violations as needed, including students participating in unsafe activities on- or off-campus. As UWM Panthers, it is our duty to uphold our guiding values of ethical behavior, based on integrity, accountability, and responsibility, and maintaining a caring, compassionate, and collegial community characterized by mutual respect and safety. Please report concerns to the Dean of Students Office using the Report It form.

UWM has a proactive relationship with area police departments. UWMPD, in cooperation with the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD), will be in the neighborhood with additional officers during the busiest times of the year. Remember, as a UWM Panther you may be subject to the non-academic misconduct process (Chapter 17 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code) – even if the incident occurs in the neighborhood or out in the community. UWMPD and MPD officers are ultimately looking out for your well-being and will enforce appropriate laws if incidents arise. Citations can be issued for: excessive noise, disorderly conduct, public drinking, under-age possession of alcohol, obstructing a police officer, house parties with illegal activities, unpermitted flags/signage, and others.

We hope you’ll be an engaged member of the community! We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these resources, be respectful, and be alert. We are here to assist you in having positive and safe experiences while living in the UWM neighborhood. We are glad to have you as a neighbor of UWM. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns at neighborhood-relations-group@uwm.edu.

Resources and considerations

Self-Report COVID-19 Diagnosis
Students who test positive for or are diagnosed based on symptoms with COVID-19 should self-report with the Dean of Students.  By doing so, students will get information on resources, help UWM identify individuals they may have come into contact with on campus so that UWM can work with the local health department, and allow UWM to clean campus areas you visited as appropriate. https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?UnivofWisconsinMilwaukee&layout_id=4.

Report Unsafe Behaviors
The Dean of Students Office will work with students to address violations as needed, including students participating in unsafe gatherings on- or off-campus.  Please report concerns about compliance to the Dean of Students Office using the ReportIt form.
Dean of Students
The Dean of Students has many resources available to students in need, including the Food Center & Pantry, emergency grants, a laptop loan program, etc.  Many of these resources are listed on the UWM Student Handbook (https://uwm.edu/studenthandbook/), but students can contact the Dean of Students to help meet their individual needs and connect them with resources:

Campus Resources
Parking and Transportation
As a resident you may be able to obtain a permit to park on the street during the day and overnight throughout the year. Transportation services can assist you with campus transportation, parking and shuttle options and BOSS.
Renting Considerations

  • Neighborhood Housing will be in touch with e-newsletters, peer-to-peer virtual visits, and more.
  • We strongly advise you to purchase a renter’s insurance plan if you haven’t done so already. This is a low-cost solution to losses caused by incidents such as theft or fire.
  • Should you have any repair issues with your rental unit, notify your landlord in writing, in a timely fashion.
  • If issues go unresolved for an unreasonable amount of time (e.g.: if your heat goes out during winter, your front door lock breaks, or a toilet stops working), please file a complaint with the Department of Neighborhood Services.
  • UWM’s University Legal Clinic is a great resource to take advantage of if you have questions about your lease, tenant rights and responsibilities, or other legal matters.
Safety

  • Download the RAVE Guardian App today and take advantage of evening safety resources like B.O.S.S. vans to assist you in traveling around the community safely.

Trash and Recycling

  • You are responsible for maintaining a clean neighborhood.
  • Add your trash and recycling days to your calendar.
  • Unless you schedule a pick-up with the city or a local 2nd-hand store, placing any furniture or trash on the curb outside of your trash and recycling cans is illegal and may result in fines from the city of Milwaukee.
  • If there were items left on the curb from previous tenants when you moved in or if you are missing trash or recycling bins, contact your landlord or property manager as soon as possible.
