Residence Hall Renovations

After many years of planning, the Sandburg Hall renovation project will be underway this summer. The renovation will start in August, and will continue over the next three years as work is completed in each of the three traditional towers (South, North, and West).

The project includes the following:

  • Replacing plumbing and pipes
  • Renovating elevators and controls
  • Updating the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems
  • Updating fire alarm and smoke detection systems
  • Expanding the number of rooms and suites available under ADA standards
The planned timeline of work is as follows:
  • August 2019-May 2020: Partial South Tower (Floors 6-20)
  • May 2020-July 2020: Entire South Tower (Floors 1-20)
  • August 2020-May 2021: Partial North Tower (Floors 10-26)
  • May 2021-July 2021: Entire North Tower (Floors G-26)
  • August 2021-July 2022: Entire West Tower (Floors 1-16)
    • As each tower is worked on, elevator project proceeds simultaneously: one elevator in the spring, one in the summer, one in the following fall
Impact to our neighborhood:

As with all construction projects, some amount of noise and disruption to traffic is to be expected. We are doing as much as we can to limit the affect of this project on our community.

University Housing will have agreements in place related to when work will be done. While this is done primarily to accommodate the sleep/study cycles of our residents, the noise dampening for the neighborhood will also be improved.

Both staging areas are north of the Sandburg Complex, with the primary entrance being the driveway closest to the intersection of Maryland Ave. & Newport Ave. Frequent truck and equipment traffic will be on that block for the duration of the project.
