Student Union Renovation
Construction for $40 million Student Union Renovation began mid-2021. Heavy infrastructure work is scheduled for the summer of 2022 with completion slated for the end of 2023. The scope of the project includes upgrading the building’s mechanical systems (such as new HVAC systems), interior renovation, circulation improvements, and added inclusive restrooms. Notable aesthetic changes include relocation and renovating several student-centric departments, renovating the Gasthaus, cleaning the exterior of the Union, removal of exterior sold walls, and adding windows to provide additional daylight throughout the building. The canopy at the Kenwood Avenue will be replaced and a new west entrance will be added off Maryland Avenue. Please note that the Union will be closed from the end of May though the middle of August because the mechanical systems will be down to install new systems.
Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin Center (Klotsche Annex)
Groundbreaking on the $8.1 million Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin Center was last August. Completion is slated for late 2022. The project features a full-sized basketball court, a basketball strength and conditioning center, and a basketball student-athlete lounge. The new annex will be connected to the Pavilion by an elevated bridge.
Northwest Quadrant Renovations
Buildings C & D of the Northwest Quadrant are being remodeling to house a nursing simulation center, the School of Information Studies, Student Health Services. This $94 million project is expected to be completed in 2022. Remodeling is nearing completion in Building D (floors 2, 3, 7 & 8) and the third floor of Building C. Work continues in Building B, including remodeling the entrance. All Northwest Quad renovations are slated for completion this year.
New Chemistry Building
Construction on the new Chemistry building began this year. It is located on Kenwood Avenue between the current Physics building and the Lubar Entrepreneurship Center and UWM Welcome Center. The anticipated completion date is early 2024. It will house classes for the 2,400 UWM students who take chemistry classes each year as well as classrooms for other students in the sciences. Foundation work is currently underway for the building.
ADDITIONAL CAMPUS PROJECTS
EMS 9-10 Renovation
Smaller classrooms and officers in EMS are being converted to modern lab spaces. It is under construction this year.
Golda Meier Library Archives Renovation
Renovation of the Golda Meier Library Archives is a gift-funded project. It includes a renovated welcome area, gallery, exhibits, classroom, and reading room. This portion of the library will be under construction through fall of 2022.
Sandburg Hall/ UWM Police Department
The North Tower of Sandburg Hall has been completed. The West Tower is next in conjunction with relocating the UWM Police Department to the current location of Norris Health Center. Norris Health Center will be moving to Northwest Quad upon completion. West Tower going out to bid this spring; construction is planned to begin late summer of 2022 with reopening scheduled for the fall 2023 semester. Norris going out to bid this summer. The hope is to start construction late 2022 with the PD relocation in May of 2023.
Mitchell Hall Exterior Renewal
Exterior repairs on Mitchell Hall are starting this spring. Windows will be replaced throughout 2022 & 2023. The Historical Society is involved in all decisions regarding the cleaning process, brick, mortar and stone replacement as well as window specifications.
Kenilworth Façade Repair
There are three smaller façade stabilization projects underway for Kenilworth. Temporary metal bracing is being installed and will remain in place until the building undergoes a more significant façade renovation in the future.
