Dear Neighborhood Resident,

This message is to inform you of events taking place during the University’s annual Fall Welcome that may impact you as a resident living close to the University.

University Housing has increased the number of move in days to allow for a more socially distanced move in process for students and families.  Move-in for Sandburg Residence Hall will take place from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on August 20th, 28th, 29th and 31st. Expect traffic on Maryland Ave. and around campus to be impacted. If possible, it is recommended to avoid driving northbound through campus on Maryland Ave. during these days and times. Additionally, parking on the east side of Maryland between Hartford and Edgewood Avenues will be restricted from 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Many annual Fall Welcome events have been cancelled or modified in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, following CDC and campus health guidelines including wearing face coverings, maintaining social distancing and adhering to space capacity requirements. UWM is discouraging in-person social gatherings with others outside of households if social distancing cannot be maintained and face coverings cannot be worn. Major traditions such as University Welcome, Panther Street Festival and Pantherfest have been cancelled and fall athletics seasons have been postponed. The majority of events will be hosted using a virtual format.

Some events will continue in a modified format, such as self-paced or low capacity outdoor tours and walks. These events include the Full Moon Walk hosted by the UWM Planetarium from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Sept. 1st, Sept. 2nd and Sept. 3rd, and the Campus Camp-Out from 7:00-11:00 p.m. on Aug. 31st and Sept. 1st. The cookout will allow students to enjoy an evening of s’mores, campfires, and fun on the Sandburg South Lawn. While there will not be amplified music at the Camp-Out, the University has secured the necessary permits as a standard procedure for all events that may impact those neighboring the University.

For any questions or concerns regarding events on-campus, please contact the Neighborhood Housing Office at 414-229-6999 or email neighborhood-relations-group@uwm.edu. Additionally, if you are interested in subscribing to the UWM Neighbor E-mail Newsletter for periodic updates on campus impacts on the neighborhood, you can do so by filling out the form at this link: https://tinyurl.com/neighbornewsletter.
