Dr. Jennifer Kibicho, Associate Professor in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\u2019s College of Nursing, was awarded a fellowship by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program<\/a> to travel to Kenya to work with the Cooperative University of Kenya (CUK) on a collaboration project with Professor Isaac Nyamongo and Dr. Monica Nederitu. The project involves curriculum development of two existing courses and one new course for graduate-level masters and doctoral students in a blended learning format, mentorship in grant writing and scholarly work, and collaborative research activities with graduate and junior faculty at CUK. This work will help CUK\u2019s vision of providing students with an education that will be useful to them as future employees and\/or policymakers in a country with high levels of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment. UW-Milwaukee is a globally-engaged university, and this project supports CUK\u2019s strategic plan to increase global cooperation and exposure for staff and students through international linkages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Jennifer Kibicho<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Cooperative University of Kenya project is one of 63 newly projects that pair African Diaspora scholars with higher education institutions and collaborators in Africa to work together on curriculum co-development, collaborative research, graduate training and mentoring activities in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program, now in its tenth year, is designed to strengthen capacity at the host institutions and develop long-term, mutually-beneficial collaborations between universities in Africa and the United States and Canada. It is funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York<\/a> and managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE)<\/a> in collaboration the Association of African Universities (AAU)<\/a>. Nearly 600 African Diaspora Fellowships have now been awarded for scholars to travel to Africa since the program\u2019s inception in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fellowships match host universities with African-born scholars and cover the expenses for project visits of between 14 and 90 days, including transportation, a daily stipend, and the cost of obtaining visas and health insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
