SHAW Counseling Hours Adjustment (4/18 - 4/19)
Counseling Services at the Student Health and Wellness Center will be closed on Thursday, April 18 and Friday, April 19 due to the WAC Conference in Milwaukee.

Welcome to the Student Health and Wellness (SHAW) Counseling Services interdisciplinary training program!

We are currently taking applications for the following programs:

  • Advanced Practicum Psychology Training: For psychology doctoral students currently working toward their degree completion.
  • Advanced Social Work Internship: Internship placement for Advanced Practice and Advanced Standing MSW students from the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at UWM.
  • Clinical Fellowship: A multidisciplinary opportunity for post-masters, post-doctoral, or ABD (“all but dissertation”) students from psychology, social work, or counseling fields.

Trainees are considered a vital part of SHAW, and we maintain a dual mission:

  • Provide the UWM student community with the very best mental health services available.
  • Mentor and train the next generation of mental health clinicians for careers as therapists.

The SHAW Counseling staff is an energetic, dedicated, and highly skilled group of clinicians who are deeply committed to meeting the mental health needs of our UWM students.

The training program is based on a philosophy of experiential learning through supervised professional practice – a “learning by doing” process.

Trainees at SHAW will:

  • Expand and deepen existing skills
  • Develop new skills and therapeutic interventions
  • Gain a deeper understanding of case conceptualization
  • Serve a diverse student population
  • Learn to examine yourself to reflect and grow as a clinician through the supervision process
  • Gain critical experience to prepare you for the next step in your career

In addition to individual counseling, trainees may have the opportunity to provide crisis services, co-lead groups and workshops, provide relationship counseling, and present outreach programming to the campus community.
