The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\u00a0is installing\u00a0a fire circle\u00a0in front of Merrill Hall\u00a0to recognize Milwaukee\u2019s\u00a0Indigenous\u00a0peoples and provide a place of celebration for\u00a0Native American\u00a0students\u00a0and others.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A ceremonial gathering was held\u00a0Tuesday\u00a0morning, Oct. 26. The gathering included\u00a0the\u00a0posting\u00a0of\u00a0an\u00a0eagle staff and singing of sunrise songs as the moon set and the sun rose in the east over the campus.<\/u><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The fire circle includes 16 granite stones,<\/u>\u00a0with carvings on a central stone depicting\u00a0<\/span>Lake Michigan, the confluence of the three rivers that meet in Milwaukee and the historical location of Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk and Menominee villages.\u00a0(The central stone is still in transit and will be installed when it arrives.)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

These three nations were stewards of the region until the early 1800s, when they were removed by the United States Army and several treaties limited the area where they could live. Today, although their nations are located north of the city, citizens of these and other Indigenous nations remain an important part of Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Fire circles are found in all parts of the globe, said Margaret\u00a0Noodin,\u00a0professor of English and American Indian Studies and director of the\u00a0Electa\u00a0Quinney Institute for American Indian Education.\u00a0Noodin\u00a0is also associate dean,<\/u>\u00a0humanities, in the\u00a0College of Letters & Science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt helps us remember that\u00a0In<\/u>digenous\u00a0people have centered themselves around the land and water they live on.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Milwaukee has the largest population of\u00a0In<\/u>digenous\u00a0peoples east of the Mississippi, but native people can feel invisible,\u00a0Noodin said.\u00a0\u201cHaving this fire circle\u202fat the heart of campus pays homage to an often-overlooked group.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Chris Cornelius, an enrolled member of the Oneida\u00a0N<\/u>ation\u00a0of Wisconsin and founding principal of\u00a0\u202f<\/span>studio:indigenous<\/span><\/a>, designed the fire circle. A member of the UWM architecture faculty since 2004, and an alumnus of UWM\u2019s School of Architecture, Cornelius was recently chosen as the chair of the Department of Architecture at the\u202f<\/span>University of New Mexico<\/span><\/a>, effective Nov. 1.\u00a0He is a prominent advocate for the awareness of architecture\u2019s connection with culture, particularly American Indian culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Chancellor Mark Mone said he sees the fire circle as \u201cimportant for celebrating our Indigenous <\/span>cultural events and more\u00a0\u2014\u00a0as a gathering place for celebrations, commemoration\u00a0and honor.\u00a0It is a place of ceremony and honoring tradition\u00a0\u2014\u00a0of ancestors, roots, the earth in respectful and meaningful ways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIn that sense,\u201d he added, \u201cit is a grounding or touchstone for us to cherish,\u00a0and I\u2019m grateful for the leadership of Drs.\u00a0Noodin\u00a0and Cornelius and\u00a0the\u00a0staff of the\u00a0Electa\u00a0Quinney Institute and American Indian Studies program to help support this. I am also very grateful for the generous support from Bader Philanthropies Inc. and Dr. Isabel Bader.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Developing a fire circle has been one of\u00a0Noodin\u2019s\u00a0goals ever since she arrived on campus in 2014,\u00a0she\u00a0said. After\u00a0she and others in the community met\u00a0with Isabel Bader, an ally of First Nations (the term describing most Indigenous people in Canada), the project became a reality with\u00a0funding from\u00a0Bader Philanthropies.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The fire circle will provide a visible space for performances, educational\u00a0activities\u00a0and ceremonies to increase the awareness of Native Americans in Milwaukee and at the university, according to\u00a0Noodin.\u00a0<\/span>For example, it will provide a place for people to gather and sing in a space where they are reminded of their ancestors. \u201cIn many Indigenous\u00a0traditions,\u00a0stories, songs, drums and stones are all considered to be animate parts of the world we share, with the power to heal and connect us.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The fire circle will be shared with other groups,\u00a0Noodin\u00a0said.\u00a0For example, the Celtic Studies program planned to use it for Samhain, a\u00a0Gaelic\u00a0holiday celebrating the\u00a0harvest\u00a0and\u00a0the beginning of winter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The gathering at the fire circle installation honored the heritage of Native American people at the university and in the community.\u00a0<\/span>The eagle staff present at the gathering belongs to the UWM campus community. It was designed by Diane Amour,\u00a0longtime\u00a0coordinator of\u00a0American Indian Student Services on campus,\u00a0and created by Michael Zimmerman Jr. as a\u00a0symbol of strength\u00a0and\u00a0protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
