{"id":96693,"date":"2021-09-15T09:57:14","date_gmt":"2021-09-15T14:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=96693"},"modified":"2024-09-27T09:58:43","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T14:58:43","slug":"uwm-student-organization-helps-make-japanese-art-exhibit-more-accessible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-student-organization-helps-make-japanese-art-exhibit-more-accessible\/","title":{"rendered":"UWM student organization helps make Japanese art exhibit more accessible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JCAUWM\/\">UWM Japanese Cultural Association<\/a> are working to make Japanese art and culture more accessible so it can be enjoyed by the greater Milwaukee community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewarehousemke.org\/\">The Warehouse<\/a>, a private art museum associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianfineart.com\/about.html\">Guardian Fine Art Services<\/a>, reached out to the UWM Japanese Cultural Association to collaborate on its current exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewarehousemke.org\/current\">\u201cArt Japan: 2021-1921\u201d<\/a>. The exhibition explores 100 years of Japanese art, featuring 126 pieces by 41 artists and includes weavings, paintings, sculptures and more.<\/p>\n<p>The UWM Japanese Cultural Association is a student organization that aims to spread awareness of Japanese traditions and modern culture to the UW-Milwaukee student body and the Milwaukee community at large. Adhering to this mission, officers Madeline Schmidt and Stephanie Aguilar contributed to the exhibition\u2019s art phone project, a cellphone audio guide composed with the help of interested community members.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96696\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96696 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/09\/japan300x200-00045_art_of_japan_artdose_magazine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The exhibit includes Red Heat Haze, a sculpture in bamboo, metal, silk and thread by Jiro Yonezawa. (Artdose Magazine photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt is a very rare opportunity to make cultures more accessible,\u201d Schmidt said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to share cultures, especially Japanese and other Eastern cultures, in the Midwest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt and Aguilar each selected a piece of art and recorded their interpretations for the project. Pieces in the exhibitions are assigned number which people can dial into on their cellphones while visiting the gallery or at home to listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike poetry, we tend to make art more complicated than it needs to be, and it scares people off,\u201d Aguilar said. \u201cIt was cool to be a part of a project that allows people to hear interpretations other than the academically \u2018correct\u2019 one. I hope it encourages them to explore the art and culture in any way they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking the art more accessible and breaking down barriers to engage with art is why projects like the art phone are important\u201d\u00a0said Danielle Paswaters, the Warehouse director of exhibitions and collections and also a UWM art history grad student. \u201cIt is one of many efforts the museum is making to collaborate with the community, including UWM students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.milwaukeemag.com\/jan-serr-and-john-shannon-believe-in-the-power-of-art\/\">Jan Serr and John Shannon<\/a>, the Warehouse and Guardian Fine Arts owners, place an emphasis accessibility,\u201d Paswaters said. \u201cEverything here \u2014 admission, events, the art phone \u2014 is free to help make it easier for anyone to come see and experience the art.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96695\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96695\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96695\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/09\/japan300x200-00019_art_of_japan_artdose_magazine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No. 10, an etching and drypoint on paper, is by Shoichi Ida. (Artdose Magazine photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Serr, a UWM alum and professional artist, and her husband, Shannon, have a long history of supporting the UWM community. In 2016, Serr and Shannon donated $1 million to the university to renovate the now <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/arts-alumna-gives-1-million-lead-gift-renovate-studio-space\/\">Jan Serr Art Studio<\/a>, located in the Kenilworth Square East building.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to collaborating on the art phone, the Japanese Cultural Association helped the Warehouse organize an outdoor Japanese taiko drum performance with the Milwaukee taiko group Hibiki. A donation box was displayed at the event, which the Warehouse tripled and divided up between the performers and the UWM Japanese Cultural Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to help others access opportunities to explore cultures,\u201d Aguilar said. \u201cIt helps us see the similarities we share instead of the differences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt Japan: 2021-1921\u201d runs from through Sept. 24, and is a part of the museum\u2019s trio of Asian art exhibitions. The other two are \u201cIndia: Photographs\u00a0(2019),\u201d which closed in late June, and \u201cJan Serr: Then and Now \u2013 Photographs of China\u201d which opens Oct. 15.<\/p>\n<p>Admission to the Warehouse, located at 1635 W. St. Paul Avenue, is free, and visitors can access the parking lot free of charge.
