The compositions and installations he\u2019s assembled are inspired by big events or moments, he says, \u201cwhen everything changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in an eclectic and artistic family, one of the first big changes came when Watson\u2019s family moved from Boise, Idaho, to Waukesha eight years ago. After high school he enrolled in the Arts\/Tech track in the Peck School\u2019s Inter-Arts BFA program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me a while to like it at UWM,\u201d he now admits. Sophomore year he took a break from college and returned to Waukesha.<\/p>\n<p>After one semester away from the university, says Watson, \u201cI couldn\u2019t wait to get back.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-top: 1px solid #cca540;border-bottom: 1px solid #cca540;padding: 5px;width: 180px;float: right\">\n<p><span class=\"uwm_head_5\">\u201cProfessors like Nathaniel [Stern] are among the people I\u2019ve met at UWM who will shape my practice, I think, for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Watson resumed his coursework, and began working as an assistant to visual artist and Peck professor Nathaniel Stern.<\/p>\n<p>As project manager for Stern\u2019s solo exhibition \u201cGiverny of the Midwest\u201d (opening in Johannesburg, South Africa, in summer 2011), Kent crops and manipulates mural-size images that Stern captures with a custom-made scanner as he wades into small bodies of water \u2013 \u00e0 la Claude Monet\u2019s Giverny series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s performance art \u2013 interacting with the landscape to capture a style of movement,\u201d says Watson. \u201cMy role is piecing Nathaniel\u2019s images together and making decisions in the series, seeing how the images correlate with one another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessors like Nathaniel are among the people I\u2019ve met at UWM who will shape my practice, I think, for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another formative faculty connection is Martin Jack Rosenblum, whose music courses helped Watson integrate his preferred art form into his coursework.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy final project represents the first time I\u2019ve incorporated songwriting into my schoolwork,\u201d says Watson. \u201cIt was kind of frowned upon, I think, as a higher art, but I was interested in it and kept doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s had lots of practice as the singer\/songwriter\/vocalist for two bands: Atlatl \u2013 an established presence in Milwaukee with airplay and live shows around the Midwest \u2013 and a newer venture: Sun Rock Man.<\/p>\n<p>But these last few weeks have been dedicated to his final Peck performance. Writing the lyrics for \u201cApples With Peanut Butter,\u201d composing the music, rehearsing and videotaping has been therapeutic but nerve-wracking, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerformance is a hard thing in that you present something to someone, they can dislike it and they can tell you they dislike it,\u201d says Watson.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t look for Watson\u2019s live performance at Arts and Technology Night, Dec. 15 at Kenilworth Square East. He\u2019s got his own ideas of how a final performance should unfold.<\/p>\n<p>Look for a stack of television monitors that disassemble his recorded performance into body parts of a whole that, synched together, play his solo performance of \u201cApples With Peanut Butter\u201d in a loop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always thought it would be interesting to have a final performance,\u201d says Watson, \u201cbut the performer isn\u2019t actually there.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kent Watson knows things are going to be different.
