{"id":91665,"date":"2021-04-06T14:28:56","date_gmt":"2021-04-06T19:28:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=91665"},"modified":"2021-04-06T14:51:06","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T19:51:06","slug":"dan-egan-named-brico-fund-journalist-in-residence-at-uwms-center-for-water-policy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/dan-egan-named-brico-fund-journalist-in-residence-at-uwms-center-for-water-policy-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Dan Egan named Brico Fund Journalist in Residence at UWM\u2019s Center for Water Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dan Egan, an environmental journalist and author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/The-Death-and-Life-of-the-Great-Lakes\/\">\u201cThe Death and Life of the Great Lakes,\u201d<\/a> has been named the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/award-winning-journalist-dan-egan-named-brico-fund-journalist-in-residence-at-uwms-center-for-water-policy\/\">Brico Fund Journalist in Residence<\/a> at the Center for Water Policy in the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough this position, we\u2019re supporting independent investigative journalism that can shed light on the connections between emerging water science, the impacts of climate disruption, and choices we make about the policies that influence our lives,\u201d said Melissa Scanlan, director of UWM&#8217;s Center for Water Policy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91663\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-91663\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/04\/egan250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan Egan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a journalist in residence, Egan will continue his award-winning work as a freelance journalist and author, using his storytelling ability to translate science and policy into compelling content for a large general audience. Protecting a national treasure such as the Great Lakes, and our other waterways, requires public awareness and understanding of the complex issues and tremendous pressures we place upon our water resources or the threats facing them. Egan\u2019s new book will dive into one of the most pressing of water contaminant issues: excessive algae fed by phosphorus pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, he will be working on a newspaper project about the impact of climate change on our waters and cities. Egan will serve as an educational resource for students, helping them to understand water science and policy communication. Egan will also represent the Center for Water Policy when he gives talks at academic, government and environmental group events throughout the Great Lakes region and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Egan was a reporter with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, covering the Great Lakes from 2002 until 2021. He has twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and has won the Alfred I. duPont\u2013Columbia University Award, John B. Oakes Award, AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award and J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award. Egan is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the Columbia School of Journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2017, Egan has been the Brico Fund Senior Water Policy Fellow in Great Lakes
